Algonquin College

Algonquin College's programs are organized mainly into fields such as Business, Humanities, and Health Sciences, and the English language training program belongs to the Humanities faculty. Upon completion of each program, a certificate or diploma is awarded. The ESL program is divided into 6 levels in total, and classes are formed after a placement test before registration. There is also a Self Access Centre that helps students study on their own the areas in which they are particularly weak, under a teacher's guidance. Field trips are included, and it is a full-time course of 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday, designed to help you adapt well to the city of Ottawa as well as improve your English. The International Access program is for students who wish to combine English training with general certificate and diploma courses, and requires English proficiency of around TOEFL 500. After testing, students can take 12 hours per week of English training together with 2 credit courses (one computer course plus one course in an area of interest). A counseling office for international students is available, and a 'Peer' program is also offered so that you can befriend Canadian students in regular programs and learn more about Canada. A TESL program, required to obtain an ESL teacher certification, is also offered.
