The English Language Center (ELC) at Brigham Young University operates under the Department of Linguistics and English Language and the Division of Continuing Education. The program was established to provide a university-affiliated practice site for teachers who are studying to teach English to speakers of other languages, and to offer high-quality English instruction to students who want to become proficient in English. Most of the teachers working here are enrolled in a TESOL master's program or hold a master's degree or certificate. ELC students are not BYU students, but they can use many other facilities, including the BYU library and the ELC's computer lab and resource room. The ELC emphasizes the use of English only. Language instruction and testing take place from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students are expected to complete 2-3 hours of homework every day. Students can also take part in various social activity groups sponsored by the ELC. Above all, because the program aims at intensive study for language development, it supports students in doing additional study beyond the 20 hours of classes per week.
