About the School
This course is offered only in the summer and provides an intensive English program. Classes are small and selective, and, befitting the school's reputation, many students take part. In addition to basic English subjects, classes on a variety of topics help improve comprehension and allow students to study comfortably. Every year, students from around the world participate in Brown's Intensive English Programs to study English, explore academic topics, and travel throughout the Northeast. After studying English at Brown, students leave with improved TOEFL scores and a better understanding of American culture. The Intensive English Language Programs at Brown University offer a unique combination of cultural experiences and intensive classroom lessons at one of America's most respected Ivy League institutions. Our approach results in more than greatly improved language skills and test scores. Brown students also gain a greater understanding of American culture, history, academics and the practical use of English. Each summer, students arrive on campus from countries around the world. Together, you live, explore, study, and travel. At the end of the program, each student leaves with vastly improved English language skills and new friends from all over the world. Intensive English Language students live on the Brown campus with other exceptional students from all over the world. Brown University is one of America's oldest and most prestigious institutions, founded in 1764 and located in historic Providence, Rhode Island. As a member of the Ivy League, Brown University has a 250-year history of excellence in education. During the summer, Brown hosts thousands of students from around the world. Brown's approach of combining cultural and academic study to improve English languageskills has an impressive track record. Students have improved their scores by as much as 200 points. Outside of class, students are immersed in the culture and history of Providence, Rhode Island, one of the oldest cities in America. Providence is known locally as "America's Renaissance City" and is centrally located to a thriving urban environment, white sand beaches, and rich American history. English Language students will meet both American and international students. Brown offers a host of opportunities to experience American culture and practice your English skills. Enjoy a local game of baseball, visit New York City, Boston, and historic Newport, Rhode Island. Students visit museums, attend plays and concerts, and spend time relaxing on the beach. Each out-of-class opportunity is designed to let students experience American culture and practice their developing English language skills.
