About the School

The English Language Institute (hereinafter ELI), affiliated with Eastern Washington University, is officially accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), and every year many language students come to the ELI to improve their English for university admission and for daily life. The goals of the ELI curriculum are to improve each student's English for university admission, to foster understanding of American culture, and to develop the ability to adapt to a diverse cultural society, which is also a goal of Eastern Washington University. The ELI provides a learning environment where students can actively participate in class and conversation and communicate actively with teachers, and strives to create a better learning environment in which students can build their English more efficiently and take part in classes with motivation. The ELI is a member institute of UCIEP (formerly the University and College Intensive English Programs consortium), an educational consortium made up only of language schools that meet certain standards. * Credit courses: Students placed in Level 5 can take university classes such as writing, reading, seminars and papers and earn credits. * Students' countries of origin: The proportion of language students by country of origin is Japan 40%, Korea and Taiwan 30%, South America 15%, and China (7%). * Instructor qualifications: The ELI has carefully selected instructors, and most hold a master's or doctoral degree in English education, linguistics or a related field. ELI instructors are also experienced staff who have received special training in teaching English to language students. Many instructors have gained experience living abroad while working in teaching positions overseas, and based on this experience they also give advice and counseling on American life outside of school. * Accommodation: ELI students can use the on-campus dormitories. The on-campus dormitories are close to classrooms, and have the advantage of allowing you to build friendships with other students living in the dormitories and to easily take part in the various events hosted by the school. Since accommodation space is limited, it is advisable to book as early as possible. If you wish to use private accommodation other than the school's, you must make the reservation or any contracts yourself. Some schools provide information on off-campus private accommodation, so please contact the school directly using its contact information for details. > School type: Public > Year established: 1979 > Affiliations: CEA, UCIEP, AAIEP > Enrollment: 70 - 80 > Class size: average 12 students > International student staff: Available > Airport pickup: Provided > Internet access: Available > Tuition: Moderate > Extracurricular activities: Several times a month > Location: Small city > Transportation: Bus
