About the School
Welcome to the English language institute (CIES) at Florida State University. Founded in 1980, CIES has taught more than 4,000 students to date. Our goal is to help students study at American universities, build successful careers in jobs that require fluent English, and return to their home countries with advanced English skills. CIES is small. Only 50 students are admitted per term, so that teachers can work with each student individually. At CIES, every student can succeed. And CIES is where you can meet many friends from all over the world. CIES is located in the center of the Florida State University campus. All classes are held in CIES's own building. CIES is a member of the Consortium of University & College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP). Faculty All CIES faculty hold at least a master's degree in teaching English as a second language, and most are in doctoral programs. The faculty's average English teaching experience is more than 7 years. All teachers speak a foreign language and have lived abroad. TOEFL 96% of the students who completed CIES's advanced course scored 550 or higher on the TOEFL (paper-based test) or 213 or higher (computer-based test). 98% of CIES students improved their TOEFL score by 40 points or more per session (7 weeks). Food and Housing Compared with other parts of the United States, the cost of living here is very low. You can rent a comfortable apartment for about $400 to $500 a month, and food and other living expenses come to about $200 a month. Most apartments are very close to the school, within 2-3 miles. There is also a convenient bus system running around campus, so you do not need a car. Program Information CIES's educational programs are designed to help students who are serious about learning English. Most students are preparing to enter an American university after completing the CIES program. Others return to their home countries to use English in their jobs, and still others come simply to experience life in another country and learn a foreign language. Beginner, intermediate and advanced (university preparation) courses are offered every year, and each course consists of 24 hours of classes per week. Each course, taught in small regular classes, focuses on learning living language under the guidance of the faculty.
