St. Cloud State University

The Intensive English Center (IEC) at SCSU (Saint Cloud State University) was established in the fall of 1997. The center is designed to provide high-quality English instruction for international students who want to improve their English while experiencing American culture and customs. The program consists of five levels, from beginner to advanced, with 23 hours of instruction per week. The IEC curriculum focuses on developing the fundamental skills essential for success at school and at work, such as reading, writing, grammar, listening and conversation. Courses in cultural orientation, oral presentations, pronunciation, discussion and computer skills are also offered. Every class is taught by professionally trained instructors who hold advanced degrees in ESL/foreign language education. Through cultural courses, social activities and guest lectures by SCSU faculty and staff, students gain a deeper understanding of American history, culture and university life. Each class has 6 to 14 students, and instructors strive to give individual attention to every student. IEC graduates who qualify may apply to SCSU undergraduate and master's/doctoral programs. Completion of the program can be submitted in place of the TOEFL for applications. Conditional admission to SCSU is also available.

Located in downtown St. Cloud, on the banks of the Mississippi River, within one hour's drive of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul. This quiet, safe city, above all friendly to foreigners, has a relatively low cost of living. Because the English program classes are small, students interact frequently with their teachers and have many opportunities to participate in class.
