About the School
The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at the University of Arizona provides quality English education through a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for academic success. Since 1968, CESL has offered specially designed, intensive English learning methods. In particular, its highly skilled faculty provide students with education on American culture and society as well as the framework needed to improve their English ability. CESL meets the strict standards of excellence required by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). This means that our program has been recognized for its excellence, and it guarantees students the highest quality education and related services. Academically qualified students can apply directly for conditional admission to the University of Arizona. From beginner to advanced levels, CESL offers a curriculum for English fluency with at least 20-22 hours of intensive and academic classes per week. This curriculum helps improve all language skills, from speaking and listening to reading and writing. All students take a placement test, and based on the results, they are assigned to customized classes suited to their individual ability. All CESL faculty members hold at least a master's degree in a related field and have teaching experience at schools in the U.S. and abroad. We have full-time staff for international student orientation, immigration advising, information on colleges and universities, and student services and immigration advising that help with applying to the UA. We also employ a full-time librarian who provides individual help and advice with reading. Students can use a study room where they can get help with homework, as well as a state-of-the-art computer lab and individual tutoring packages. Our student activities coordinator encourages students to take part in a variety of organized activities that help them practice English.
