About the School
The program has offered English courses since 1964 and is a member of UCIEP. Classes are conducted using computer labs and language labs, and business and industry courses are also offered. Since its founding in 1964, the Applied English Center (AEC) at the University of Kansas (KU) has provided English language programs for students and scholars from around the world. Students of all English levels can take classes, and AEC's instructors will encourage students and instill in them the confidence that they can succeed. Students will prepare to adapt successfully to American university life and will receive instruction that helps them better understand and adjust to American society. AEC is dedicated to offering programs that meet each individual's needs in order to strengthen students' cultural adjustment and academic achievement. AEC students can take part in free conversation groups, and can further improve their English by using the AEC computer lab and KU's language learning lab. Reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension are taught across 6 levels. Students who complete AEC Levels 4 and 5 can earn academic credit. Auditing is possible, and classes are 20 hours per week. AEC teaches 500 students from about 60 countries every year. On average, 50% of students come from Asia, with 10% from Europe, 10% from South America, 10% from Africa, and 20% from the Middle East. The 30 or so AEC staff and instructors all hold master's or doctoral degrees. Most have 10 to 20 years of ESL teaching experience in the United States or abroad. AEC students can use the on-campus dormitories. Students living in the on-campus dormitories are close to their classrooms, can easily take part in various campus events, and can interact with American students and other international students. Dormitories are limited, so it is best to apply as early as possible. The school introduces off-campus apartments, but students must make all housing arrangements themselves.
