About the School

The English Language Programs (hereinafter ELP), the language school affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, was established in 1960. Every year, more than 1,800 language students from around the world come to ELP to improve their academic English and everyday English. ELP offers a wide range of programs, including General English, Business English, university admission preparation, and English for professionals, and all ELP courses are designed to provide guidance tailored to each student's learning ability and an optimal learning environment. In addition to General English programs, ELP practices international exchange and English education in a broad range of areas, such as providing university preparation programs and hosting cultural events, and also offers university guidance counseling to students who wish to go on to university. Along with classroom lessons, cultural activities and various outdoor activities such as visits to famous sites in Pennsylvania give students opportunities to use English with Americans, creating a learning environment in which they naturally pick up English and American culture. ELP students can use all the facilities on campus, including the library, computer lab, campus bus, ice skating rink, indoor swimming pool, and gymnasium. ELP is a member of UCIEP (formerly the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs), an educational consortium made up only of language programs that meet certain standards. Students at the Advanced level in credit-bearing courses can take classes at the University's College of General Studies or in the evening division of the Wharton School (management school) and receive academic credit. When applying for a course, applicants must submit documents proving their English ability and an English-language transcript. Students' countries of origin: Every year, around 1,800 language students from around the world enroll at ELP. The recent breakdown of students by region of origin is Asia 72% (Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China), South America 12%, Europe 10%, Middle East 3%, Africa 2%, and the U.S. 1%. Instructor qualifications: ELP has a carefully selected faculty. Most instructors hold a master's or doctoral degree in English education, linguistics, or a related field, and some hold master's degrees such as an MBA. ELP instructors are also experienced staff trained in teaching English to language students. Many ELP instructors are active in professional educational organizations, and are also actively engaged in writing ESL-related books, publishing articles, and consulting in the ESL (English education) field. Accommodation: ELP students can choose the ELP residence in the on-campus Sheraton hotel, off-campus residences (apartments), or a homestay. On-campus housing is close to the classrooms, and offers the advantages of building friendships with other residents and easily taking part in the various events hosted by the school. Students who prefer an independent living space for their privacy can use off-campus housing (apartments) located near the school's International House, and for students who wish to experience American life and culture, a homestay living with an American family is arranged. Availability of each type of accommodation may differ depending on the program, so please check the language program information page for availability. Accommodation space is limited, so it is advisable to book as early as possible. Some schools also provide information on private off-campus accommodation, so for details, please contact the school directly using the school's contact information.
