About the School
The English Language Institute, an affiliated institution of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, offers students an intensive English program. Classes focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and listening help international students, visitors, and professionals learn English successfully. Established in 1978 as an English education institution for language students, the English Language Institute (hereafter ELI) prepares and delivers a high-quality curriculum to improve both the English needed for university admission and the everyday English needed for life in the U.S. Each semester, about 35-40 students enroll in ELI classes, which focus on improving students' listening, grammar, reading, writing, and communication skills in preparation for university entrance. The ELI curriculum is also designed so that students can experience and learn American culture firsthand through activities such as visiting local attractions. In addition to the general English program, ELI provides English education together with international exchange in a wide range of areas through a university preparation program and cultural events. It also arranges meetings between university students and program students at the university's International House, giving students opportunities to practice English and make American friends. Students in the ELI program are issued a student ID that also serves as an access pass to various facilities on the university campus, and they can use all campus facilities on equal terms with regular university students. ELI is a member of AAIEP (American Association of Intensive English Programs), an association made up only of language schools that meet certain standards. * Students' countries of origin About 35-40 students enroll in ELI each semester. By country of origin: Korea 35%, Japan 16%, Taiwan and Thailand 6%, Colombia and Indonesia 2.5%, China, Mali, and Venezuela 2%, Brazil, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Turkey 1%, and other countries account for 17%. * Instructor qualifications ELI has a carefully selected teaching staff, and most instructors hold a master's or doctoral degree in English education, linguistics, or a related field. ELI instructors are also experienced staff who have received special training in teaching English to language students. Many instructors have worked in academic positions abroad and gained experience living overseas, and based on this experience they also offer language students advice and counseling on life in the U.S. outside of school. * Accommodation ELI students can use the on-campus dormitories. The dormitories are close to the classrooms, and offer the advantages of building friendships with other students living there and easily taking part in the various events hosted by the university. Accommodation space is limited, so it is advisable to book as early as possible. Depending on the school, information on private off-campus accommodation may also be provided.
