About the School

The English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) was founded in 1980 and offers classes for students who want to improve the English skills essential for success at American universities, and for students who want to reach a comparable level of English. ELI teachers are dedicated to providing high-quality English instruction that meets each student's academic needs. Outside the classroom as well, ELI offers many opportunities to practice English with native English speakers through its conversation partner program. ELI also provides students with academic counseling on matters such as university admission, as well as student counseling services on housing and general situations. Students who qualify for the advanced ELI classes have the opportunity to take UTA undergraduate courses for two semesters through the "Bridge Program." Students who successfully complete the Bridge Program can receive conditional undergraduate admission to UTA. Instructor qualifications The ELI faculty is highly experienced. They have taught English in the U.S. or in Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Peru, Thailand, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Most hold a master's or doctoral degree in teaching English as a second language or a related field. Accommodation Students can stay in on-campus dormitories or in off-campus residences. Please note that accommodation options vary depending on the program you take. The advantages of on-campus dormitories are that classrooms are close, it is convenient to take part in campus activities, and there are many opportunities to meet American and international students. Students who choose housing off campus interact independently with the community outside school and enjoy more privacy. Because housing is limited, it is best to apply as early as possible. The school also introduces off-campus private apartments, but students must make the arrangements themselves. Conditional admission system For undergraduate programs only, students who meet certain standards but lack only a TOEFL score can receive conditional admission.

Surroundings

ELI is located on the UTA campus in Arlington. Arlington, with a population of 350,000, is one of the cities that make up the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. Among the tourist attractions students can enjoy are Six Flags over Texas, a nationally popular amusement park; Hurricane Harbor, the largest water park in the U.S.; and The Ballpark, the home of the hugely popular professional baseball team, the Texas Rangers. Nearby there are also the Fort Worth Zoo, the Dallas Zoo, various art museums, clubs, restaurants, and numerous entertainment options to enjoy at night. Although Arlington and the Metroplex area are thriving, students can still enjoy the cowboy culture that is synonymous with Texas. You can experience this traditional American culture especially in Fort Worth, Arlington's neighboring city.
