About the School

Established in 1975, the Career English Language Center for International Students (CELCIS) at Western Michigan University is an intensive English language program for international students who wish to pursue higher education in the United States, and is also useful for members of the general public who wish to improve their English for more professional purposes. Our intensive language program consists of two sessions, a 15-week session and a 7-week session, with 20 hours of class per week. Classes are divided into four levels, and experienced professional ESL teachers provide intensive instruction in English reading, writing, speaking, listening, research, and study skills. Through various extracurricular activities, you can practice your English and have a great time. You can enjoy conversation groups, meeting American families (friendship families), social gatherings, parties, sports, on-campus cultural events, and trips to interesting places such as Chicago, the Lake Michigan resort area, and Indiana Amish Country. CELCIS students live in on-campus housing and can use all of the state-of-the-art campus and recreation facilities of Western Michigan University. Kalamazoo has a total population of 90,000; it is a small city, yet everyone is friendly and many cultures coexist here. With Chicago, a three-hour trip away, you can also experience big-city culture, and our school offers an ideal environment for language study. Students who complete CELCIS and wish to enter Western Michigan University must have an average grade of "B" or higher. English proficiency is recognized without submitting a TOEFL score once the advanced level of CELCIS is successfully completed. However, an exception applies if you wish to enroll in one of the few graduate programs that require a TOEFL score of 500 or higher. To enroll without restrictions, a TOEFL score of 550 or higher is required.
