General English Our General English course prepares students to use English language effectively in a wide range of social situations throughout day-to-day life. The course takes a highly communicative approach to language learning, which teaches, practices and produces the core language skills throughout each module: speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. This is English for Life in Australia and throughout the world today. The General English course is accredited by NEAS (National ELT Accreditation Scheme Ltd). General English is offered at the following levels in 5 separate courses: • ELEMENTARY • PRE-INTERMEDIATE • INTERMEDIATE • UPPER INTERMEDIATE • ADVANCED Each course, or curriculum, is covered over a 10 week period, although this might vary slightly from student to student. Classes in General English are suitable for students who: • Want to learn English for their job or career • Want to improve their English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing • Want to improve their vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation • Want to learn English for travel • Want to learn more about Australia • Want to be able to communicate effectively in most situations • Want to lay the foundations for further progression to more specialized studies Assessment/Entry Requirements General English students are tested for proficiency in the broad skill areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Grammar during Orientation, and are placed in the appropriate level ideal for their learning. A test may be taken prior to arrival, however, students are re-tested upon arrival to confirm their English language level. English Only Policy Our English language staff believe in engendering a full-immersion learning environment. This includes requiring all students and staff to speak in English language throughout their time on campus, both in and out of the classroom, which has been shown to improve the learning and confidence of all our international students. With this in mind, all our English language campuses expect and enforce quite strictly an ‘English Only’ policy Core Text/Text Book Policy All students are informed which core texts will be essential for achieving the outcomes of their course. Subsequently, the students must supply their own effective copies of the core texts to be able to learn in the classroom, and achieve those desired outcomes.

English for Academic Purposes English for Academic Purposes is a full-time intensive program which equips students with the academic English and study skills required to study at college or university. Moreover, the course prepares students for the study culture of English speaking colleges and universities, and demonstrates how to maintain academic integrity in a higher learning environment. EAP is offered at two different levels: EAP 1) Introduces the reading and listening skills as well as critical thinking that students will require in their college studies; familiarises students with a range of writing genres and how to review and produce them; develops the skills and confidence required to give oral presentations. EAP 2) Develops the skills introduced in EAP 1: writing skills, research skills for essay writing, text analysis skills and note-taking strategies. Further emphasis is also given to student responsibility for academic integrity – avoiding plagiarism and how to reference properly. Pathway Options Students who successfully complete GE4 gain direct entry into English for Academic Purposes program (EAP 1) at CIC. Students who successfully complete EAP 1 will qualify for direct entry into Certificate and Diploma courses at Cambridge International College or to EAP 2, and students who successfully complete EAP 2, will qualify for direct entry into CIC Bachelor courses. Entry Requirements Entry to CIC EAP program is via one of the following methods:

ㆍTake CIC’s placement test and be admitted at the appropriate level based on the result of this test.

ㆍSubmit IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test results. These will correspond to the following EAP entry levels: Entry to EAP 1 – IELTS 5.0 Entry to EAP 2 – IELTS 5.5
