English Language Programs

English Language Programs The General English (GE) syllabus is an ideal way to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills for everyday use. More specifically, you will acquire the language skills needed to feel confident in a wide range of social and professional situations. General English offers the flexibility of start dates every Monday and provides learning materials to suit all levels. * Duration : 1 - 50 weeks (CRICOS Duration 50 weeks for Melbourne Sydney and Queensland) (CRICOS Duration 60 weeks for Adelaide) Includes 20 contact hours and 5 hours of optional elective study per week * Start dates : Every Monday * Locations : Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney * Maximum Class Size : 18 students * Books and Materials : Less than AUD$100 per level * Course Structure General English students are encouraged to develop their basic knowledge of the English language and the skills needed to use English in a global environment. Carrick teachers use examination and practical communication activities to prepare students to use the English language in real world situations. Carrick's General English program offers six levels of English, from beginner to advanced, with each level generally running for 12 weeks. Each level is specifically designed to take students one step closer to their goal of being fluent in English. Students' individual English level is assessed when they enrol, ensuring that they are placed at the correct level. Carrick offers its General English students a range of classes and activities so they can tailor a course to their needs and learning style. General English students also have the option to study an elective of their choice. Electives may include grammar, study skills, Australian idioms and slang, multimedia and more.

IELTS Preparation

IELTS Preparation The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally recognised examination that helps students gain entry into tertiary courses and progress in their careers. Carrick English Language's IELTS Preparation course focuses directly on the skills students need to be successful in the IELTS examination. * Duration: 20 contact hours and 5 hours of optional elective study per week, over 12 weeks * Locations: Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney * Start Dates: Every Monday * Maximum Class Size: 18 students * Books and Materials : Approximately AUD$100 * Course Structure To gain the best possible result in the IELTS examination, students develop the four key skill areas in English: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Carrick's experienced teachers will also help students build confidence in dealing with the examination. The IELTS Preparation course is designed for students aiming for an IELTS score of 5.5 and above. An IELTS level of 5.0 or equivalent is required for entry. * Assessment Students sit a daily assessment, which includes IELTS practice test which assess all four skills areas. Carrick students receive regular feedback on their progress from highly qualified and experienced teachers. * Materials Materials are specifically chosen to develop the students' language skills and prepare them for the IELTS examination.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

English for Academic Purposes - EAP The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course prepares students with the English language skills they need, to excel in the Australian academic environment. Students will gain the confidence and skills in applying the English language to their higher education studies. * Duration 20 contact hours and 5 hours of optional elective study per week, 10 weeks CRICOS Duration: Sydney 20 weeks, Adelaide 24 weeks, Brisbane 24 weeks, Melbourne 24 weeks * Locations : Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney * Start Dates : January, February, April, June, August and October * Maximum Class Size : 18 students * Course: Carrick's EAP program is specifically designed to give students the English language skills they need to be successful in an academic environment. Experienced teachers assist students to gain a thorough understanding and knowledge of the academic culture, expectations and assessment methods of western educational institutions. Carrick's EAP Program has two distinct levels, EAP 1, which prepares students for vocational courses of study and EAP 2, which prepares students for university courses. Each course runs for 10 weeks. Enrolment for EAP 1 requires an IELTS level of 5.0 or equivalent; and EAP 2 requires an IELTS level of 5.5 or equivalent, or the successful completion of EAP 1. * Career Pathways Students who successfully complete Carrick's EAP course are equipped with the skills required to gain entry into many of Australia's leading Australian universities. * Assessment Carrick's EAP assessment tasks prepare students for the assessment requirements of their future course of study. Students have ongoing academic assessments to prepare them for their university studies, including essay writing, research projects, presentations and examinations. * Materials Teachers in Carrick's EAP course use materials that are both informative and relevant to the students future study needs, such as real-life listening and reading, communication activities, DVDs and multimedia

First Certificate in English (FCE)

First Certificate in English- FCE The First Certificate in English (FCE) course prepares students for the internationally recognised FCE examination. It is an intensive course that develops English accuracy and proficiency and is internationally recognised. * Duration: 20 contact hours and 5 hours of optional elective study per week, over 10 weeks * Start Dates: January, March and September * Locations: Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney * Maximum Class Size: 18 students * Books and Materials : AUD$100 * Course Structure The First Certificate in English (FCE) is an Advanced course which aims to prepare students for the internationally recognised Cambridge examinations. It provides the necessary foundation skills for students to build confidence and accuracy in English prior to sitting the examination. Many students enrol in our ELICOS program before entering the FCE course to ensure their English language is adequate. Carrick's teachers prepare students for the examinations, which are held three times each year. It is optional for students to sit the test, which costs approximately $345. At the end of the program, all students are awarded a Carrick Certificate of Attendance and an Achievement Report which indicates the completion level. * Materials Students are guided through the use of a class texts and the extensive use of materials. It is required that all English language students purchase the prescribed textbook, which costs under AUD$100.

High School Preparatiion English

High School Preparation English Carrick Institute of Education takes care of all its students but is particularly aware of the needs of young students who are preparing to enter an Australian high school. The institute offers these students a safe and secure environment, providing them with their own designated classrooms where their English language, personal and social needs are always met. * Duration: From 20 to 40 weeks (CRICOS 46 weeks) * Locations: Melbourne * Start Dates: Every Monday * Course Structure You can choose to study 20, 30 or 40 weeks in order to acquire the necessary English for successful study of the key curriculum areas of mathematics, science, social studies and information technology. You will be taught meta-skills such as research, study skills and collaborative learning techniques. This, combined with a regular homework program, means you are prepared to not only enter an Australian High School but to excel there. You are also encouraged to participate in a weekly sports program and various social programs organised by the institute and computer sessions in one of the institute's laboratories. * Entry Requirements To be eligible to apply for HSP, you must have successfully completed Year 10 or the equivalent in their home country and have scored a minimum of 50 per cent in the Carrick's English placement test. You are also required to have a minimum IELTS level of 4.5. * Australian High School Preparation program The High School Preparation (HSP) program prepares you academically and socially to join the Australian high school system from Year 11 onward and encourages focused autonomous learning. We take care to develop close ties with receiving schools and our HSP teachers will personally introduce you to your new school environment. This High School Preparation program is recognised by many Australian private and government high schools. * Assessment Assessment for the course is conducted both formally and informally. Your participation and effort in class, ability to complete the set homework tasks and independent study skills are constantly observed and assessed. On successful completion of the program you will receive a Certificate of Participation and a report of their level of ability, noting any areas requiring attention. * Materials You will be guided through resources including class texts, other print resources, videos, CD-ROMs and internet-based resources. It is required that all students purchase the prescribed textbook, which costs under A$100.
