Intensive English Courses Intensive English classes focus on communicative language skills for listening and speaking. They are designed to increase your knowledge of vocabulary, idioms and grammar. These classes provide you with lots of opportunities to talk with other students. Also, the Intensive English course helps you to develop your reading and writing skills. This course is for students who want to make rapid progress. In Intensive English you will study 20 hours a week. Classes are small and there are lots of opportunities to participate. Levels Intensive English has six levels . If you study hard and work with your teachers, it is possible for you to make good progress in your studies. Remember rates of progress vary from person to person. Skills Lessons After lunch, classes focus on skills like listening and speaking or grammar and writing. Your skills lessons might focus on grammar, vocabulary, writing, listening, reading or speaking. If you are interested in IELTS, it’s even possible to look at the skills needed for IELTS; however, this depends on your level of English. (The number of classes we run at any one time is subject to student numbers.)

English for Academic Purposes (EAP/IELTS) EAP/IELTS classes focus on academic language skills. The course is designed to help you develop the skills you need for being successful in an academic setting. You will be able to increase your listening and speaking competency for academic studies. You will get to practice reading academic topics and completing academic tasks and assignments. The course will help you to be successful in further studies. After lunch, you can do IELTS practice or you can do an elective . You might want to focus on grammar, vocabulary, writing, listening, reading or speaking skills. If you want to enter a university programme, this course is ideally suited for you. Castle College provides academic pathways that allow you to meet the English proficiency requirements for further studies. This course is for students who want to go on to further study at university or in vocational education. In EAP/IELTS you will study 20 hours a week. Classes are focused on academic skills. Entry Requirements You need to provide evidence that shows you can achieve a 5.0 score in the Academic Module of the IELTS or the equivalent score in TOEIC/TOEFL or a PTE Academic Score of 36 to 41 on the Pearson Test of English. You can also enter directly if you get a high enough score on Castle College’s placement test. You could also study Intensive English until your English is acceptable for entry to the EAP course.

High School Preparation (HSP) Castle College offers a protected environment where your son or daughter can become accustomed to a new culture and build confidence before they move on to study in an Australian high school. The course focuses on developing the language and cultural survival skills necessary for academic and social success at high school. Your child will study English for everyday purposes as well as English specific to subjects like mathematics, geography, science and history. He or she will be assessed regularly. In HSP students study 20 hours a week. The course provides students with the English and the skills needed to study in an Australian high school. Your child can go to an Australian high school and receive an Australian qualification. LEVELS: There are four levels for HSP.1

ㆍLevel 4 Intermediate * Entry Requirements Your son or daughter will need to demonstrate that they can achieve a 3.0 score in the Academic Module of the IELTS or the equivalent score in TOEIC/TOEFL or the Pearson Test of English. They can also enter directly if they get an acceptable score on Castle College’s placement test. If your son or daughter’s English is not sufficient for HSP, they might have to join an Intensive English class until their English reaches the entry requirement. Your son or daughter will also need to be at least 16 years of age when they start the course. If you are unsure about how long your child should study, it is possible for them to do a pre-enrolment test. This will help us to estimate the length of time they will need in order to enter high school. You will need to request this service.

English for Nursing and Health Professionals This program is a full-time face-to-face course that is 30 weeks in duration. The students study 20 hours a week. The course requires no specialist knowledge on the part of the student. It is designed for students from a non-English speaking background who want to study or work effectively in clinical settings where English is the spoken language and incorporates a variety of course books and materials written specifically for the medical, health and nursing industries. This course teaches the language used in the medical, health and nursing industries and covers many topics related to this area such as the hospital team and the duties associated with them, commonly used medical terminology, reading, writing, speaking and listening in the context of health care and nursing as well as treatments and anatomical systems. Assessment tasks include vocabulary tests, grammar tests, communicative tasks and oral presentations. The course includes authentic tasks and activities based on everyday nursing scenarios - from dealing with patients in pain to discussing lifestyle changes. The course also prepares students for doing the IELTS exam and for going on to further studies. * Levels English for Nursing and Health Professionals has two levels.
