General English General English courses commence every Monday and students may study for as many weeks as they like. Full-time General English (25 contact hours per week), Part-time General English (15 contact hours per week). These intensive courses are offered from Elementary to Advanced levels with a focus on: listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. The General English (GE) courses aim to:

ㆍdevelop students' confidence in using English for general purposes

ㆍdevelop students' English proficiency so they can focus on EAP once they have attained the appropriate level of English

ㆍimprove students' skills in order to communicate more effectively in English in both formal and informal settings. Student progress is assessed through weekly in-class tests in the core areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, as well as meta-skills such as presentation delivery and structured discussions. Every five weeks, a major assessment is also done and advancement is based on the results of all of these assessments.

English for Academic Purposes Direct Entry English Program (DEEP) English for Academic Purposes is taught through our Direct Entry English Program (DEEP), which will equip you with the English language skills required to study at a tertiary institution in Australia. Classes focus on academic requirements and expectations, and learning strategies needed at a tertiary level. Once you have successfully completed the DEEP program, you will be eligible for direct entry into a range of certificate and diploma courses at the JCU Pathway College, Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE and the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE, as well as specific undergraduate and postgraduate courses at James Cook University campuses in Cairns and Townsville. DEEP requires full-time attendance. The program consists of three courses: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [DEEP 1] 10 weeks full-time Minimum entry requirement: • IELTS 5.0 (with a minimum 4.5 in all sub-scores) or equivalent English language entry ratings. DEEP 1 is designed to equip you with basic academic language skills at the Upper Intermediate level. During the course, you will increase your grammar and vocabulary knowledge; develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills; and learn how to speak at seminars, research and write reports, and give oral presentations – all within an academic context. Assessment Assessed tasks: • progress tests • mid-course/end-of-course test • essays • oral presentation • seminars Pathway After successfully completing DEEP 1, you will be eligible to begin the DEEP 2 course or enrol in selected programs at the JCU Pathway College, Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE or the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE, provided you meet the relevant academic entry requirements. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [DEEP 2] 10 weeks full-time Minimum entry requirement: • IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum 5.0 in all sub-scores) or equivalent English language entry ratings. DEEP 2 is designed to help you raise your academic language and study skills to a more advanced level. The course uses specific English for Academic Purposes resources to equip you with the skills you will require to participate successfully in degree or vocational education courses. Assessment Assessed tasks: • progress tests • mid-course/end-of-course test • essays • oral presentation • seminars • report researching, writing and presentation Pathway After successfully completing DEEP 2, you will be granted direct entry into TAFE programs and selected James Cook University degree programs, provided you meet the relevant academic entry requirements. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [DEEP 3] 10 weeks full-time Minimum entry requirement: • IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in all sub-scores) or equivalent English language entry ratings. DEEP 3 is designed to help you boost your academic language and study skills to an Advanced level to a higher level language proficiency. The course uses specific English for Academic Purposes resources to equip you with the skills you will require to participate successfully in degree or higher degree programs. Assessment Assessed tasks: • progress tests • mid-course/end-of-course test • essays • oral presentation • seminars • report researching, writing and presentation Pathway After successfully completing DEEP 3, you will be granted direct entry into selected James Cook University degree programs or TAFE programs, provided you meet the relevant academic entry requirements.

IELTS Exam Preparation Intensive courses: 2 x 10 week blocks per level; full-time (part time course also available) In order to achieve your highest possible score in an IELTS test, you will require both sound English skills and test-taking skills. This course will equip you with the necessary skills to successfully sit an official IELTS test. Minimum entry requirement • level 1: IELTS 5.0 • level 2: IELTS 6.0 For students requiring an IELTS band between 4.0 - 5.0, specialised programs combining intensive General English leading towards IETS preparation are available. Assessment The assessment and grading criteria for this preparation course is based on parts of the actual IELTS exams.
