General English

ㆍCourse Outcomes General English outcomes vary depending on the level. Outcomes included improved ability to understand spoken English and to communicate in common situations by using language functions and the appropriate vocabulary, improved ability to read and understand high frequency vocabulary and simple sentences, to write paragraphs with accurate spelling and punctuation and to understand and use accurately grammatical structures.

ㆍEnglish proficiency level Elementary to Advanced (levels A1/A2 to C1+ on the Common European Framework) . We aim to offer up to six levels, so that you can study with other students at a similar level to you (the number of levels we have at any time depends on how many students we have at that level).

ㆍCourse content The General English course follows a textbook. Teachers will also provide you with other material like different textbooks, films, web sites and, sometimes, they will take you on excursions to places that are related to the topics or themes you are studying. You will usually have two teachers for regular classes, and different teachers for Elective classes. Regular classes run five days a week and the teachers will work closely with you to make sure all aspects of your language development are covered.

ㆍTeaching Methodology The way the course is taught is based on the most up to date understandings of how language is best taught and learnt. The teaching methods we use are influenced by our understanding of: 1. The nature of language 2. The nature of language learning 3. The roles of teacher, learner and learning materials. The course follows the themes and topics presented in the course books. The core elements of the program are grammar, vocabulary, and the skills of speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing.

ㆍIn general, classes Involve lots of communicative activities, tasks, role-plays, games, writing letters and replying to them, etc. You will do most of these activities with other students, and your teacher will listen carefully to you, and help with any problems. Classes cover speaking, listening, writing and reading, as well as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Although there is a text book for each level, teachers will also use other materials, depending on the needs of the students in the class.

ㆍAssessment Assessment is an important part of your course. It tells us how well you are doing and what we need to do to help develop your English. There are three main forms of assessment. First, when you first come to the college you will do a test that will tell us the best level for you to begin. Then you will have a test every week. This will let you check your progress. Then, in the fourth week of the term, you will do a term test. The term test will cover speaking, listening, reading and writing. The term test helps us to decide if you are ready for the next level of study. It also helps us to check your progress. You should expect to spend up to three months at each level. However, we have a flexible system so, if you learn quickly, you can progress in less time than that. If you do stay in a level for three months then you can expect to do three term tests. At the end of your course you will get a certificate that shows how long you studied, the level you achieved and your grades for speaking, listening, reading and writing.

ㆍElective class Full time students on student visas will have one hour a day of Elective classes. This means you can choose a special focus to help you learn in the area of English where you need the most help. Elective classes include: conversation, current affair discussion groups, movies, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation. So if you're worried about your pronunciation, you can do something about it. However, the Elective classes we run when you are studying will be dependant upon demand.

EAP & IELTS Preparation course

ㆍCourse Outcomes In this course, you will learn English and at the same time prepare for your future studies. This includes academic skills such as presentation and research, on top of the English language itself. You will be able to increase your listening and speaking competencies for academic studies. You will practice reading academic topics and completing academic tasks and assignments. The course will help you with your further studies. At the same time, you will get a lot of the information you need in order to get the best IELTS score you can get. This includes techniques of working within the time limits, a variety of vocabulary you need for academic English (especially for writing), how to avoid silence in the speaking test, and how to tackle common traps in reading and listening.

ㆍIELTS in short IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. IELTS provides a measure of a student's ability to communicate in English. The Callan Method of Accelerated English Language Learning is a fast and effective system for studying English. The method was developed firstly in England over 40 years ago by Mr. Callan. The Method is a highly structured program of instruction, divided into twelve stages with a test at the end of each stage. In class, the teacher asks students a series of questions from a textbook and the students must answers the questions. Sometimes the teacher helps the students to answer questions when students are having difficulty answering quickly. The teacher will correct the student’s mistake and do their best to correct pronunciation, in this way the student has their English corrected in class. There are seven books in the Callan series. Each book, except for book 7, contains two stages. Stages are measured by the number of new words that appear in the stage. Generally, there are 250 new words per stage － so that by end of stage 12 in book 6 a student should have mastery of 4300 words and if students complete book 7 they will learn up to 5621 words.
