General English General English classes are available from Beginner to Advanced levels and comprise 23 hours* of English language tuition per week delivered in six week modules throughout the year. The Academy’s comprehensive syllabus ensures that the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are covered every day in context. NEW GENERATION ENGLISH (EVENING) New Generation English is a serious English Program where the learning is flexible and "tech savvy". The program is designed to get you where you want to be and still leave you time to enjoy your life! We combine face-to-face classes (15 hours) with online study (5 hours) to give you more time to be out of the class and into the real world using your English in whatever context you need. Cambridge Exam Courses The Cambridge University Examination Courses offer you the ultimate verification that you have been externally assessed and graded. Many companies around the world require a Cambridge Certificate for employment promotion and recruitment. Phoenix Academy has over 18 years of history in successfully preparing thousands of students for the Cambridge Examinations. A large team of experienced Cambridge teachers who are trained to know the syllabus and examination intimately will ensure your success. Special Features of the FCE & CAE Preparation Courses include: • Available as 6, 10 and 12-week programs (see below for dates). • Pre qualifying entrance examination available in your home country. • Each class has a maximum of 13 students. • Classes are intensive (23 hours/week), highly focused and challenging. • The latest course books are used, providing comprehensive study of all the skills required to pass the examinations. • Examination practice, including mock examinations, are an integral part of the program. • Extensive self-access materials are available for each examination. • Individual coaching by our expert teaching staff for advice on their personalised self-access program. FIRST CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (FCE) PREPARATION This course is ideal for students who need to be able to communicate confidently in English in most situations. Students who would like to take the FCE preparation course need to pass the FCE entry test at an Intermediate level before being accepted. In addition Phoenix Academy offers the opportunity for strong FCE candidates to study in the FCE preparation course and also enrol in the CAE examination if they wish. ADVANCED CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (CAE) PREPARATION This course is designed for students who should already be able to communicate easily in most everyday situations. It is particularly suitable for students who need to use English at work or for study. Students who would like to take the CAE course need to pass the CAE entry test at an Upper-Intermediate level before being accepted. Phoenix Academy offers the opportunity for strong CAE candidates to study in the CAE preparation course and also enrol in the Cambridge Proficiency Examination (CPE) if they wish. OPEN CAMBRIDGE - Flexible & On Demand Prepare for the Cambridge First Certificate Exam (FCE) and Preliminary English Test (PET) with this flexible, on demand Cambridge Computer Based Testing (CBT) Course. In this course students receive specific training in the five exams. Language enhancement would occur in the context of the exams, with most emphasis placed on exam task types and strategies. The course is designed so that each week is dedicated to one of the four written papers: Reading, Writing; Use of English and Listening, while Speaking is covered continuously throughout the course. ACADEMIC ENGLISH (Certficate IV in English For Academic Purposes 91459NSW) These courses are designed for students who do not meet the English entry requirements for university at either undergraduate or postgraduate level. Course components include: • Academic reading and writing skills classes. • Computing for academic purposes. • Participation in tutorial discussions • Conducting research using libraries and the Internet. • 6 week modules available.

Academic English- High School Preparation The objective of the High School Preparation Program is to prepare students to enter mainstream formal secondary education in Australia or another English speaking country. • Intensive study of English Language - grammar and functions. • English language training in secondary school skill areas related to subjects. • Small classes. • Reading and note taking strategies and skills. • Essay writing skills. • Oral communication and listening skills. • Debating, discussion and oral presentations. • Study skills, research skills, speed reading, writing reports and assignments. • Special Focus Studies including: Social Science, Media Studies, Information Technology, Sports and Culture. • Students studying at Intermediate level and above will also work towards/complete Certificate III in English Proficiency (40622SA). • Full recreation program. Year 11/12 Studies The Phoenix Academy High School Year 11/12 Studies (Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation 39260QLD) program is designed for Australian and international students at pre-undergraduate level who need a bridge between academic studies completed by the student and the academic requirements of Australian universities. On successful completion of the Year 11/12 Studies Program, students are eligible for direct entry at first year level to Murdoch University, Edith Cowan University, Curtin University and other selected Australian universities in the Commerce or Liberal Arts disciplines that Phoenix Academy has articulation agreements with. FLEXIBLE START DATES Students who enrol in the Phoenix Year 11/12 Studies program have a choice of starting in January, April, July or October. ACCREDITATION Phoenix Academy is registered as a Non Government School by the Government of Western Australia, Department of Education Services. Under this registration Phoenix Academy is approved to deliver the Year 11/12 Studies Program for international students. The Year 11/12 Studies is also a Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation. All Phoenix Academy courses are registered on the Australian Government Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Phoenix Academy is accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to deliver the Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation, which is a nationally recognised qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework. As a Registered Training Organisation, Phoenix Academy is approved to deliver the Certificate IV ATP to both international & Australian students. EXEMPTIONS/CREDIT AT UNIVERSITY Some advanced level students may be permitted to undertake some Diploma of Business units during their Year 11/12 studies course. These Diploma units may be recognised as being equivalent to first year university units by Universities and advanced standing or credit will therefore be awarded. ATTENDANCE The Year 11/12 Studies course is extremely intensive. It is very important that students attend all classes as 60% of the assessment weighting is attributed to in class work and class participation. Australian students who are unable to keep up with their study load and who are experiencing difficulties can negotiate to reduce their load to a part time one or to defer their studies. FLEXIBLE MODES OF STUDIES Students may apply for Recognised Prior Learning (rpl) when they enter the Year 11/12 Studies course. This means that they may not have to complete all units of study. STUDENT SUPPORT Each week there is a Home Room period scheduled in the timetable. It is in the Home Room period that you will receive help with Study Skills Strategies as well as experiencing guest speakers from industry and universities. Many key Administrative staff at Phoenix Academy are available to offer pastoral support and guidance to help you achieve your maximum potential. Please take advantage of this help. From time to time extra classes are conducted in Maths and Literacy Enrichment to assist those students who are having difficulty in these key areas.

Diploma of Business The Phoenix Academy Diploma of Business (BSB50207) offers students a pathway to second year university. On successful completion of the Diploma of Business and meeting university minimum entry requirements graduating students from the Diploma of Business are able to transfer to the relevant undergraduate degree program with up to a year of advanced standing at universities in Australia. The amount of advanced standing will depend on each university’s entry requirement. English for Business Purposes A six-week course most suited to students at an Intermediate level or above which is topic-based and covers reading, writing, listening and speaking. Grammar development and specialist business vocabulary are included. Students will visit companies or listen to guest speakers to learn more about the business world. Course components include:

Certificate IV in TESOL The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a short intensive course that offers basic training in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Participants will be given a brief introduction to techniques of classroom management and assessment, and a more thorough introduction to presentation techniques, lesson preparation and analysing language for communicative purposes. The course is highly practical and a major emphasis will be on practice teaching. Participants will work collaboratively to prepare and teach lessons, progressing to taking sole responsibility for a two-hour lesson. In addition to the units that make up the course, participants will also develop the following Employability Skills: ◦ Communication ◦ Teamwork ◦ Problem solving ◦ Initiative and enterprise ◦ Planning and organising ◦ Self-management ◦ Learning ◦ Technology Students of this course will develop and enhance skills in cross-cultural awareness. This TESOL Certificate IV course has been developed under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), therefore it is a government-accredited and nationally recognised course. Recognition of Prior learning (RPL) is "the acknowledgement of the skills and knowledge" that you have gained through previous studies, work and life experiences. If RPL is granted, this will mean that you will not have to complete the study or assessments for a unit or units of competency.

English Plus The Phoenix Academy ‘English Plus’ programs are designed for those who would like to combine their English language studies with a lot of fun! There are 3 suggested packages to choose from (see below) and it’s easy to make your stay even more action packed by adding additional activities to your base program by selecting from the wide range of optional activities advertised through the Phoenix Adventure Centre. Combines morning General English language classes with afternoon sightseeing, recreation and sporting activities.
