Pathway English • Level: Pre-Intermediate to Advanced • Duration: 5 to 45 weeks Pathway English is structured as a multi-level program providing intensive English language tuition for pre-intermediate to advanced learners. According to level, class content combines both General English and Academic English skills and includes practice in the following areas: • Listening • Speaking • Reading • Writing • Vocabulary • Pronunciation • Grammar knowledge and usage Academic language skills are introduced from the first level and become more intensive as students’ language proficiency increases. Class work prepares students for all aspects of academic study as well as the IELTS test and includes practice strategies for: • Oral Presentations • Listening and note-taking • Reading texts for speed and accuracy • Critical thinking • Developing vocabulary and summarising • Effective study skills • Writing essays Pathway English enables students to develop the English language skills necessary to achieve IELTS and other test scores required to enter Direct Entry Academic Programs, Foundation Studies, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas, and undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.

Direct Entry Academic Program (DEAP) The Direct Entry Academic Program is for students who have already met the academic conditions for their chosen degree but who have not yet met the English-language requirement. The program is offered at both the Hobart and Launceston campuses and, by concentrating on improving academic language, research and study skills, prepares students for university study at both undergraduate and postgraduate degree level. Successful completion of DEAP makes it unnecessary to sit another IELTS or equivalent test before commencing university studies. Duration: 20 weeks (DEAP20), 15 weeks (DEAP15) or 10 weeks (DEAP10) Pre-course requirements:

Foundation Studies The Foundation Studies program is specifically designed for international students who need to upgrade their academic results to meet university entry requirements. This 28 week "Standard" Foundation Studies Program meets the requirements for Foundation Programs which have been registered on CRICOS for delivery in Australia. The Foundation Studies Program offers three major study streams including Science and Engineering, Business and Finance, and Culture and Communication. Successful completion of the Foundation Studies Program provides direct entry to most degree courses at this University including:

ㆍBusiness ** This does not include Medicine or Psychology Please note that entry to Pharmacy is conditional upon your final Foundation results, and the minimum GPA required for this degree program does not guarantee entry due to limited available places. Entry will be awarded on merit. Students must have IELTS scores of overall 5.5 with no score below 5.0 or TOEFL (PBT) 527 and TWE 4 or TOEFL (iBT) 60 with no score less than 17 or PTE Academic 43 with no score lower than 36. A Foundation Access pathway is available for students with a lower IELTS score who need to further develop English skills before starting a Foundation course (see Entry Requirements). Students are taught in small groups by University tutors with very good knowledge of the content of 1st Year University subjects in their area. Foundation Studies students become very familiar with the content of their 1st Year subjects and cover some of the topics in this program. This is an excellent opportunity to commence University of Tasmania degree courses after 28 weeks of study.
