Our English for Academic Success program is offered full-time (EFAS A) or part-time (EFAS B). The full-time program offers twenty hours or more a week of intensive training in communication skills. It is designed to meet the needs of students wanting to pursue studies at universities where English is the primary language of research and instruction. All of our TESL-certified and experienced teachers take your progress seriously. There are four levels in the EFAS program, ranging from the low intermediate level (100) to the advanced level (400). We do not offer beginner level classes in the EFAS program. Students will be placed in a level based on the results of their placement test on the first day of the program. Students have the opportunity to complete a level in one term. Students may take levels 100, 200, and 300 for no more than two terms, but may take level 400 up to three terms. Whenever possible, class sizes are kept to 18 students to allow for an increased opportunity to interact with the teacher and classmates. On the rare occasions when classes are larger, a teaching assistant will provide additional help. Daily and weekly assignments, projects, and presentations introduce the formal requirements of English and prepare students to write such standardized tests as the TOEFL, CAEL and the TWE. Successful completion of the advanced (400) level of the EFAS program satisfies the University of Waterloo's English Language Requirement for undergraduate students. In order to successfully complete the 400 level, students must have an overall average of 80%. Students must also attend at least 80% of their classes. NEW! Students who complete level 400 with a pass (75%) satisfy the English Proficiency Requirement for Wilfrid Laurier University. Students can take up to 2 full-time terms to successfully complete a level. Students who need to take the same level for a third time must speak with the Assistant Director. No student will be allowed to take the same level four times.
