All applicants are required to pass a pre-entry test before being offered a place. Programme Content This programme is aimed at students who wish to apply for entry to a regular programme of study at a university or institute of technology in New Zealand. The programme includes study skills for tertiary study, such as academic writing, listening and note-taking and seminar skills. The programme includes IELTS test preparation. Programme Outcome

Students who successfully pass the EAS programme may gain direct entry into a CPIT mainstream programme without the need for IELTS or TOEFL.

Cambridge Exam Courses We specialise in preparing our students for Cambridge examinations. Cambridge exams have five components: reading comprehension, writing genres, use of English, listening comprehension, and an interview. These exams are internationally recognised and offered at different levels. Many students take these exams for job entry, university entry, or as recognition of their English level.

IELTS Preparation Intensive IELTS exam preparation to cover the components of reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition a four week intensive programme is offered in January and June. CPIT is the only certified IELTS testing centre in Christchurch.

ㆍProgramme Code: CH3841 The Certificate for Entry to Tertiary Studies requires a minimum 120 credits, with the 60 at the highest level determining the level of the Award for each student. A wide range of courses across all CPIT's faculties can be included in the Certificate programme (with the permission of the appropriate Faculty). Each student's course of study must be approved by the Faculty offering the 'target programme' (ie: the qualification that the student wants to do next) or the Faculty offering the majority of the courses a student has selected. Some basic courses in computing, communication, and study skills are compulsory for all students unless the student can demonstrate these skills prior to enrolment. ㆍOther pathways will be developed on an ongoing basis, so please check with the relevant Faculty for further information. Career/Further Opportunities: This qualification is designed to help students meet the entry requirements for a further qualification. It can also be chosen by people who are studying for the sheer enjoyment of it and have varied interests. The Certificate of Proficiency allows students to 'package' up a selection of courses into their own customised qualification. Entry: Ideally you will have the following minimum requirements (if you do not, but think you have the equivalent, please contact us).

ㆍStudents must be at least 16 years of age (the minimum school leaving age), however a student must be 18 years of age or over to be eligible for student loans and/or allowances.

ㆍNo previous specified academic qualifications or experience apply, except that students must meet any pre- or corequisite requirements for specific courses enrolled in as part of the qualification.

ㆍStudents must have written and oral English skills to the level consistent with and meeting the co-requisites and prerequisites of the selected courses. Courses that help students to achieve English or communication skills at the standard required for the target (usually higher level) qualification the student is preparing to apply for, may be included in the courses selected. Educational Criteria (for the Design pathway):

ㆍEither: 12 credits in NCEA L1 in Art and in English, or artwork that demonstrates skill to an equivalent level and a pass in the School of Art & Design literacy test. English Language Requirements:

ㆍThe English Language requirement for applicants from a non-English speaking background depends on the particular course(s) chosen and the language requirements of the "target" qualification.

ㆍThe entry standard for each applicant's course of study is decided by the relevant Faculty, in consultation with the International School of English Language or the NESB Learning Adviser.

ㆍApplicants who do not meet any of these requirements are advised to enrol in an Individual Learning Programme at the Languages Self Access Centre (LSAC) at CPIT.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
