Founded in 1960, the Callan School of English is the largest Private English School in Europe, and uses the Callan Method. Located in the busy city centre, this exciting area offers students a huge amount to do and see. The School gives you a legally-valid written guarantee that it will get you to the level of (and through) the Cambridge exams in a quarter of the time taken by any other school (not using the Callan Method) in London, or through any other exam at the same level. And if you fail the exams, we will provide free lessons until successful. The Callan School's 86 classrooms and 2500 students make it the largest English school in Europe. Because of the Callan School's relatively small classes of 6 to 14 students, (the average being 8), the Callan students enjoy at least 40% more speaking time than at most other schools. 12 of the 28 schools in central London put 15 to 20 students in a class. Students in a class of 14 enjoy 43% more speaking time than those in a class of 20. The large size of the School allows it to grade students far more accurately than other schools and to fit them into courses at exactly their level and speed of learning. Despite its great size, the School has retained its intimate atmosphere and personal service by dividing itself into small self-contained departments.

General English The Callan Method is a rapid teaching method created specifi cally to improve the listening comprehension and speaking abilities of students in an intensive atmosphere. The teacher is constantly asking you questions, which means that you are hearing and using the language as much as possible. The Callan Method uses a carefully organised and structured script of approximately one thousand pages, and both vocabulary and grammar are introduced in a programmed way, with systematic revision and reinforcement. The reading and writing aspects of the language are also carefully programmed into the course so that you revise and consolidate what you have learned. In the lesson, the teacher corrects your pronunciation, grammar and sentence structure as you speak. In this way, you learn about your mistakes at the moment you make them, and are immediately helped to correct yourself. The teacher keeps the lesson moving quickly in order that you learn to understand English when it is spoken at its natural speed. This also guarantees effi cient use of lesson time and means that everyone is concentrating hard all the time. Callan School has a fl exible class management system. When you fi rst arrive at the school, your level is determined by a teacher and you are placed into an appropriate class. However, if, over time, the class becomes too diffi cult or too easy for you, the school may suggest that you move to another class, and you can also ask to move if you wish. This allows you either to do extra revision or move up to a higher class if suitable. In this way, every student is more able to learn at their own speed, and does not have to progress at the rate of the slowest pupil, or be hurried along too quickly.

Recently opened is our new student room which we’ve named ‘The Speakeasy’. Situated on the first floor it’s the most impressive space in our building with an ornate ceiling and grand windows looking onto Oxford Street.
