Academic Year Programmes These flexible programmes are ideal for long term students that would like to book a 6, 9 or 12 month General English course. Courses of 22, 33 or 44 weeks are split into terms of 11 weeks with a ‘holiday' period between each term. English Level All English language levels are acceptable for this course. However, beginners must follow an intensive 32 lesson course at least for the first month of their course. This course must include 15 hours of General English lessons plus an extra 10 hours of afternoon elective classes each week. Course Length & Start Dates Courses start at a minimum of 6 months (or 21 Weeks). The maximum course length is 12 months (or 46 weeks). Lessons Students choosing an academic year course will receive our General English course as standard. This course consists of 20 lessons (15 hours of teaching time) per week. Students receive 3 hours of teaching time and a 20 minute coffee break each weekday morning between 09:00 – 12:20 (times may be different during July and August). Courses follow a syllabus which is primarily designed to develop the four skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening, and to increase awareness of how English works. Elective Classes As well as having 15 hours of teaching each week as part of the standard General English course, students choosing our academic year programme also have the option to upgrade their studies by choosing any of our elective classes. We have two courses of upgrades available: -. Intensive 26 is our first upgrade and includes 26 lessons (20 hours of teaching time) per week. This course consists of 15 hours of General English tuition and 2 afternoons of an elective course (an extra 5 hours) per week -. Intensive 32 is our final upgrade and includes 32 lessons (25 hours of teaching time) per week. This course consists of 15 hour of General English tuition and 4 afternoons of up to two elective courses (an extra 10 hours) per week Students receive two and a half hours of teaching time and a 20 minute coffee break during each elective class. Lessons take place from Monday to Thursday between 13:30 and 16:20 (times may be different during July and August). Our elective classes allow students to focus their studies on specific areas of English language in order to achieve their own personal goals. General English Programmes Our General English courses follow a syllabus which is designed to help students develop fluency and confidence when communicating in English and improve their abilities in the four main skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening. We also encourage students to develop their own independent learning skills and monitor their progress through regular tests and written feedback reports. These courses are designed to give students a structured and enjoyable way to progress in English and to achieve the learning targets they set for themselves. English Level All English language levels are acceptable for this course. However, beginners must follow an intensive 32 lesson course for at least the first month of their course. Churchill House is a Cambridge Exam Centre so you can sit the exams here in Ramsgate. Our Cambridge Examination Courses: FCE, CAE and Proficiency are 25 hours per week. They are run completely independently of other courses which means you are studying all day only with students taking the same examination as yourself. Cambridge First Certificate The most popular Cambridge Examination, this tests English at a Higher Intermediate level. The examinations are held three times a year in March, June and December. Churchill House runs a 9 or 10 week course starting in January then 11 or 12 week courses starting in March and September. We also offer a 12 or 13 week First Certificate Preparation Course during the summer time for those who require the intense Exam preparation we can offer but who wish to take the exam in their own country or at a later date. Cambridge Advanced The Certificate in Advanced English offers a high-level qualification to those students who wish to use English in their jobs and whose level is in between First Certificate and Proficiency. The emphasis of the exam is very much directed towards real-world tasks so that you develop those language skills that are most useful to you in your work. Churchill House runs courses twice a year. Our Cambridge Advanced courses are highly successful, backed by the professional expertise that we have applied to our other Cambridge courses in the last 20 years. Cambridge Proficiency The Proficiency is the highest non-specialist Cambridge Examination and is the English language qualification most widely accepted by British Universities. In a number of countries a pass at Proficiency level qualifies you to teach English in the school system. Cambridge Lead Up Courses: First Certificate and Advanced The Lead Up Courses are specially designed to improve your English to the level required to join the main Cambridge examination courses. They are available as part of the Elective system (see Main and Intensive Courses) and consist of 4 weeks x 15 hours General English plus a 5 hours per week elective course specialising in the exam skills necessary to achieve success in the examination course itself.
Adult Summer Courses During peak summer months (late June to early September) we offer summer vacation courses at our Churchill House main school in Ramsgate. These courses combine General English lessons with an optional programme of fun leisure activities and exciting excursions. English Level All English language levels are acceptable for this course. Our adult summer classes generally start earlier than non-summer classes (between 08:15 and 09:00) and are scheduled to finish between 11:35 and 12:20, although this may be change if necessary. ㆍTo provide a platform for students’ continued language learning after they leave us Social Programme Students choosing our standard summer vacation package can combine their course with a carefully designed leisure programme that offers a variety of activities, sports and excursions. There are two different activity options available for students choosing our summer programmes: Standard Programme (also known as “activity programme”) – this includes 5 free evening activities for students aged 16+. This programme also includes free afternoon activities for students aged 16-17. This option is included as standard in the price of our summer vacation courses Excursion Programme (also known as “activity programme plus”) – this includes the free activities listed above as well as one half-day trip during the week (usually Wednesday) and one full-day excursion at the weekend. Our Social Club is responsible for organising weekly leisure schedules and students are able to book extra activities and excursions throughout the summer.
