General English classes run throughout the year at the University of Edinburgh and include a wide programme of courses during the summer months. Our courses are ideal for students with pre-intermediate to advanced English. Most classes run Monday to Friday for 20 hours for a minimum of 3 weeks. If you are looking for a less intensive study option you may be interested in our Budget Traveller course - it offers 15 hours for a minimum of 2 weeks. Alternatively outside the summer period we run General English Semi-Intensive which is also 15 hours per week.
Entry Requirements/ Participants This course is designed for people studying business, economics or other business-related subjects or for those who are already working in a business environment. Participants need at least a good intermediate level of English. You should be able to read English (textbooks, newspapers, etc.) relatively easily and to understand spoken English with few problems. All students are tested on arrival and the Course Director uses the results of the test to ensure that those wishing to follow this course have reached the necessary minimum level. Course The course is normally taken for 5 hours per week in conjunction with General English Intensive. The minimum period of enrolment is three weeks. It is possible to take both Foundation Academic English and Business English classes together. Students are expected to do a certain amount of homework and are encouraged to use our Self-Access facilities for self-study. Course Aims Students activate and enlarge their vocabulary and develop their communicative skills (speaking,listening,writing,reading) in a variety of business-related contexts. Course Content The course uses a range of materials including published textbooks and authentic materials in print, DVD, video and audio, and computer based. Course activities include: - reading and interpreting text and data on a variety of business topics - authentic writing tasks including letters, fax and reports - role plays (for example meetings and negotiations) - discussion and problem-solving tasks in business related contexts - planning, preparing and presenting short talks - individual and group project work
Entry Requirements/ Participants English for Medicine is designed for doctors and medical students. A good intermediate level, or above, of English is required. All students are tested and interviewed on arrival and the course director uses the results of the test to ensure that those wishing to follow this course have reached the necessary minimum level. Course Length The course is normally taken for 5 hours per week in conjunction with General English Intensive. The minimum period of enrolment is three weeks. However, students are advised to enrol for at least half a term. Course Aims Its aim is to develop fluency and confidence in using English in medical contexts. The focus is on carrying out professional activities in English, but attention is given to grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation as required. Course Content Activities may include: - listening to video-recorded medical talks and case presentations; - summarising and discussing articles on current issues in medicine; - writing up and presenting cases; - working with multi-media case problems; - doctor-patient role-plays (history-taking, instruction and explanation); - preparation and presentation of short talks.

Legal English vocabulary is introduced through the exploration of legal topics. Participants are encouraged to develop their ability to speak through explanations and discussions of aspects of their own legal systems. Participants need at least a good intermediate level of English. You should be able to read English (textbooks, newspapers, etc.) relatively easily and to understand spoken English with few problems. Legal English vocabulary is introduced through the exploration of legal topics. Participants are encouraged to develop their ability to speak through explanations and discussions of aspects of their own legal systems. Other topics which may be covered include: ◦contract law language ◦company law ◦EU law ◦reading case reports ◦criminal and civil law ELTC offers a preparatory language programme for the Cambridge International Legal English Certificate (ILEC).
