The Intensive English Program (IEP) was established in 1983 for undergraduate and graduate international students whose application to an academic program needs the support of further training in English, the language of instruction. After their English studies, or concurrently with them, most of our students pursue an academic degree at CUA. The program includes a heavy emphasis on academic language skills at the highest levels.

The intensive language courses for international students cover all language skills at four levels of proficiency, as well as American culture and American literature, vocabulary development, listening to academic lectures, etc. The lowest level of language training is high-beginning. The highest level of intensive training is high-intermediate. The courses below high-intermediate are not for academic credit, but the hours taken at these levels count toward a student's full-time status required by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Some classes at the high-intermediate level are for academic credit. Qualified students at the high-intermediate level may also take a maximum of 3 undergraduate credits in an academic program. The advanced level is non-intensive and also offers undergraduate academic credit. IEP follows the two-semester system. Each semester lasts 15 weeks and starts at approximately the same time every year: the first semester starts in the last week of August; the second semester at the beginning of January.
