Admission to the ESOL program will be based on the student's GPA and their score on a standardized exam. The minimum scores needed for admission are as follows: Minimum TOEFL Internet-based Score of 48 Minimum TOEFL Computer-based Score of 140 Minimum TOEFL Paper-based Score of 460 Overall IELTS band score of 4.5 with no individual band score below 4.0 Minimum SAT Critical Reading sub-score of 380 Minimum ACT English sub-score of 15 ESOL Class Information Our ESOL classes have an 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio, which allows for small classes and individualized attention. To assist our ESOL students, free tutoring is also available at the Center for Academic Excellence. ESOL courses at Columbia College are designed with special emphases in mind - such as composition, speaking and listening, and academic content. Students in all ESOL classes are strongly encouraged to: practice reading, writing, speaking and listening every day; use English, both in and out of the classroom; and ask questions and express themselves actively in speaking and writing. Level One: 20 hours of classroom instruction in English per week, 12 credit hours per semester. Students may be allowed to take one additional course per semester with the advisor's consent.
