Intensive English Program The California State University, East Bay Intensive English Program features: • Six levels of instruction • IELTS preparation classes • Academic advising for undergraduate students • Official IELTS available every month on campus • Customized preparation for graduate students Program Outcomes: • Fluency in English speaking and writing, for academic, professional, and general purposes • Preparation for freshman year at CSUEB through the University Preparation Program • Broadened knowledge of academic subjects from a U.S. perspective • Study with academically talented American and other international students • Enjoyment of many intellectual, social and cultural experiences Students from many different countries are enrolled in each 10-week quarter. The varied curriculum has been designed to meet the individual educational and career goals of each student. Classes are small, usually numbering between 15–18 students, allowing for a dynamic exchange between students and instructor. Faculty and students utilize all campus resources, including the computer labs, library, and multimedia learning center. Every student is assigned to an advisor for the time they are in the program. This advisor assists in choosing appropriate courses and moving the student into a university degree program. Curriculum The curriculum consists of a required Core Program of 3 courses: • Writing (6 hours per week) • Reading/Vocabulary (4 hours per week) • Listening/Speaking (4 hours per week) Students also choose one mandatory course from a variety of Electives at all levels to practice learning typical first year university content in English. Electives include such courses as U.S. American History, Earth Science, U.S. American Culture, Public Speaking, Business or Arts Appreciation. Students who are planning to go to an undergraduate or graduate program may also choose to take IELTS Preparation as an Elective. In the afternoons, all students are required to take either 1 or 2 of the following supplemental programs: • University Preparation Program - These are workshops and activities to prepare for freshman year at CSUEB • Bay Area Experience • Community Visits - These are weekly programs of activities to encourage English use outside the classroom
Pre-Business Analytics Program Overview Offered in collaboration with the College of Business and Economics, the Pre-MBA is an intensive, integrated curriculum of business courses, GMAT preparation and critical academic skills for international students preparing to enter graduate business school. Students are admitted to this program when preparing for admission to the AACSB accredited Masters in Business Administration at CSU East Bay. The length of program depends on their needs - one to three quarters of study are possible (three to nine months). A typical three month program consists of: • One graduate level MBA Fundamental course for credit (4 quarter credits) in Accounting, Information Technology or Management • Graduate Writing and IELTS Preparation Workshops (9 hours per week) • GMAT Preparation Workshops (5 to 10 hours per week) • One undergraduate Math or Statistics course if required by College of Business Admission Requirements for the Pre-MBA Program • A degree satisfying the undergraduate degree requirements of the MBA, including no less than a GPA of 2.5 in the final two years of study. Meeting this requirement to be confirmed through screening of the transcript by International Admissions, following guidelines to be set by the College of Business. • IELTS 6 or TOEFL 71 Students must have already applied to the MBA before beginning the program through CSU Mentor. A GMAT score is a requirement for continuing from first to second quarter in the program. Admission Requirements for the CSU East Bay MBA Program After completion of the Pre-MBA program, students have usually satisfied all of the international student requirements to enter the CSU East Bay MBA program, namely: GMAT + last two year's undergraduate GPA x 200 = 1050 Both GMAT Verbal and GMAT Quant scores over 20th percentile IELTS 6.5. or TOEFL 79 Ideal Students • Students who do not possess an undergraduate degree in business, and intend to pursue an MBA degree or any Master's in business degree at Cal State East Bay or other American university. • Undergraduate business majors who need to master the English and/or academic skills needed to pass required TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT exams, and academic course work for acceptance to the university MBA Program. • Non-business professionals who seek an accelerated foundation in business administration without the degree Program Outcomes • Full transfer of credit into the CSU East Bay MBA of one to three fundamental courses (4-12 units) • Admission to MBA after meeting TOEFL or IELTS and GMAT requirements Program Benefits • Strengthen business communication skills • Develop necessary study skills for success in graduate business school • Learn about US business practices • Intensive GMAT test taking preparation Course Curriculum Three MBA Fundamental courses are taught as part of the Pre-MBA, one each in the following quarters: Fall: MGMT 6015 Data Analysis and Decision Modeling for Managers (4 units) Quantitative modeling and data analysis as they are applied for making managerial decisions in organizations. Topics include regression, correlation, forecasting models, optimization, decision analysis, project management, and simulation. Emphasis on usage of spreadsheet modeling and appropriate software technology. Winter: ACCT 6015 Financial Accounting (4 units) Focus on financial reporting, analysis, interpretation, and decision-making for manager. Topics include constructing, analyzing and interpreting financial statements , analyzing operating income, operating assets, debt financing, owner financing, and off-balance-sheet financing. Spring: ITM 6015 Information Systems Development and Management (4 units) Development of business information technology strategies and solutions for enterprise and global information management systems. Topics include the structure, analysis, design, and implementation of information technology. Summer: No credit course is given. IELTS Preparation An intensive overview of advanced vocabulary, reading, grammar, listening and essay writing. Focus is placed on improving IELTS test scores for admission to an MBA program at Cal State East Bay or other institution. GMAT Preparation • GMAT Preparation I A 50-hour, 10-week course that focuses on the verbal section of the test; course offers access to state of the art multimedia software in the ALP Learning Center. • GMAT Preparation II A 50-hour, 10-week course for students who need an introduction to the GMAT without emphasis on specific skills. • GMAT Quant A 50-hour, 10-week course for students who need to practice the math skills required on the Quantitative section of the GMAT
International Business Diploma Program Overview The California State University, East Bay Diploma in International Business provides businesspeople the educational foundation necessary to operate and succeed in the international marketplace. This diploma is especially important given that the San Francisco Bay Area is a critical international hub. Taught by a combination of globally-recognized Cal State East Bay faculty and successful multinational business executives, this comprehensive international business education program covers topics ranging from international marketing and international law to international business strategy and supply chain management. Students can also look forward to high-profile guest speakers who will share specific and practical advice about issues and problems they have faced working in the international realm. Program Objectives • To provide graduates the skills and real-world knowledge and perspective necessary to meet the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly evolving international business arena. • To provide graduates a working knowledge of all areas of international business. Admission Requirements • Four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited institution • Minimum TOEFL Score 71 (iBT) or IELTS 6.0 Diploma Requirements • Complete two-quarter option: Six required courses (24 units) • Complete three-quarter option, specializing in Marketing or other business-related area: Six required courses (24 units) plus 12 additional units • Maintain 2.5 overall grade-point average • Receive no grade below a C in any course Course Curriculum Three of the following courses will be offered each academic quarter. Paralegal Studies Certificate The American Bar Association (ABA)-approved California State University, East Bay Certificate in Paralegal Studies qualifies aspiring paralegals for entry-level positions in the field, whether in law offices, corporations, government agencies or other organizations. San Francisco Bay Area legal professionals hold Cal State East Bay's paralegal program in high regard. Many graduates have become accomplished paralegals at some of the most prestigious law firms in the East Bay Area. Paralegals cannot provide legal advice, except as directed by an attorney, nor can they establish a client/business relationship or represent a client in court. Program Objectives • To give graduates the educational foundation necessary for a successful career as a paralegal in a variety of organizations. • To provide graduates a way to meet the educational requirements for paralegals set forth by the State of California Business and Professions Code section 6450 et seq. • To give graduates an understanding of the structure of the state and federal court system. • To give graduates professional legal research and writing skills and sharpen their skills in problem solving and analytical thinking. • To provide graduates an understanding of civil lawsuits and give them the skills and confidence necessary to assist in the discovery and preparation of related legal documents. Who Should Attend • Individuals interested in being prepared to work with attorneys in all areas of civil and criminal law as an entry-level paralegal. • Individuals interested in becoming paralegals who seek a way to meet the educational requirements dictated by California law. • Current paralegals who seek to differentiate themselves with an ABA-approved Paralegal Studies certificate, increase earning potential and meet or exceed the educational requirements dictated by California law.
Conditional Admission to Cal State East Bay Undergraduate Degree Programs California State University, East Bay offers admission to CSUEB undergraduate programs to those students who are academically qualified, but have not met the English language requirement below at the time of application. These students are issued a conditional admission letter to CSUEB and advised to attend the ALP Intensive English Program until they meet the language requirement.
