American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) 캘리포니아 주립대학 산마르코스 캠퍼스의 영어집중 프로그램인 American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI)는 1992년에 설립 되었습니다. 장래 대학진학을 위한 준비, 또는 일상생활영어 회화력을 키우기 위해 세계 각국에서 많은 유학생들이 ALCI에서 공부를 하고 있습니다. 언어연수 학생들에게는 학생증이 발행되므로, 현지학생들과 대등히 캠퍼스 시설을 자유로이 이용할 수 있습니다. 일반 집중과정은 토플준비를 하는 학생들에게 적합한 반입니다. 이 과정을 수료하면 조건부 입학이 가능하며 수료전에 토플 550점이상을 받을시는 바로 입학이 가능합니다. Communication and American Culture Program은 실용적인 회화실력을 향상시키고자 하는 학생들에게 좋은 프로그램입니다.
조건부 입학허가서가 가능하며 소규모 어학센터인바, 교사와 친해질 수 있는 기회가 많습니다. 대학진학과정, 회화반, 단기 프로그램등을 개설하고 있고, 대학에 딸린 골프코스 및 이 학교에 있는 올림픽 경기 트랙을 사용할 수도 있습니다. 이곳에 대학이 설립된지 불과 13년으로서 모든 설비가 최신의 새것들입니다. 2007년 가을부터는 기숙사가 설립되는데 현재는 학교인근의 홈스테이을 이용하고 있습니다.

Intensive Academic Preparation Program 일년에 봄과 가을학기의 16주 프로그램과 여름학기의 10주 프로그램이 있습니다. 학생은 1주에 24시간의 교실수업을 받으며, 그 외에도 개인지도, 언어 실습실등에도 참가 할 수 있습니다. 교실수업은 듣기, 말하기, 쓰기, 읽기 분야의 종합적인 영어능력 습득을 목적으로 하고 있습니다. 영어능력 뿐만 아니라 미국문화나 역사를 배우고 경험 할 수 있는 행사도 제공되고 있습니다. 유명장소 방문등 다양한 문화 이벤트도 기획하고 있습니다. 회화, 발음, 비지니스 영어, TOEFL 준비, 미국문화, 대화실력 향상등의 선택과목도 제공되고 있습니다. 본 프로그램은 초급부터 6급까지로 나누어져 있고, 프로그램 첫날에 이루어지는 반배정 시험에 의해 학생들의 반배정이 이루어 집니다. 상급 학생들에게는 대학진학 준비를 위한 프로그램, TOEFL대책 내용 관련 수업도 제공하며, 진학상담도 받고 있습니다. 또한 학교측의 허가 아래 본 학교의 대학 수업 수강을 할 수가 있습니다. 본 프로그램의 교실 인원수는 약12-16명 입니다. IAP Program Features: • Six proficiency levels • 24 class hours per week • Small classes (average class size is 15) • American conversation partners • Group activities such as beach BBQs and bonfires, picnics, and cultural celebrations • Visits to University classes • Academic courses in reading, vocabulary, academic writing, grammar, public speaking, study skills, and test preparation • CSUSM credit classes for qualified, advanced-level students • Chances to make international friends • Certificates of completion
TOEFL Waiver Program To clear the undergraduate English proficiency requirement, instead of taking the TOEFL or IELTS, ALCI students must complete the following: • Successfully complete the Intensive Academic Preparation (IAP) program • Earn a grade of "B" or higher in core ALCI courses (3.0 GPA) • Complete one of the advanced level ALCI Research Writing classes and earn a passing grade • Earn the qualifying undergraduate level score on the ALCI placement/exit test • Have a letter sent to CSU San Marcos enrollment services from the ALCI Director that says you are ready for college- or university-level work To clear the graduate English proficiency requirement, instead of taking the TOEFL or IELTS, ALCI students must complete ALL of the above listed requirements, PLUS: • Complete the highest level Research Writing class and earn a passing grade of "B" or higher • Complete at least one full semester at Level 105 or higher, AND • Test into Level 106 by semester's end You must also meet all CSUSM admission requirements. Students who enter the ALCI program at the fall or spring second entry start date are not eligible for TOEFL waiver until they successfully complete at least one full semester (fall, spring, or summer).
Semester at CSU San Marcos The ALCI offers semester-long and year-long study-abroad programs for international university students. As a Semester at CSU San Marcos student, you may take university classes without applying to the university. As a Semester at CSU San Marcos student, you may take between one and four university classes for credit (12 units maximum), per semester depending on your English level. If you have a TOEFL score of 61, with a minimum score of 19 on the writing and 14 on the other sections, an IELTS score of 5.5 with a 5.5 in the Writing section, or a DAAD Level B, you may be eligible to take four university classes without enrolling in ALCI's English classes. If you do not have a TOEFL or IELTS score, you will take the ALCI's English placement test on the first day of New Student Orientation. If you feel that your English skill is higher than your TOEFL or IELTS score indicates, you may also take the ALCI English placement test on the first day of New Student Orientation. Taking our English placement test will not delay your enrollment in university classes. You will pay tuition and fees to the ALCI. Plan to arrive in San Marcos at least five days before the semester start date. You must meet with the ALCI Academic Coordinator during New Student Orientation to select your university courses. You will enroll in university courses on a space-available basis during the first week of university classes. You will receive specific instructions about getting professor approval and enrolling in university classes during ALCI New Student Orientation. You should make arrangements to stay in San Marcos for at least two weeks after the ALCI program end date in order to complete university courses and take final exams. As a Semester at CSU San Marcos student, you are part of California State University San Marcos campus life. You have a student identification card and full access to: • Computer and language labs • The library and media center • The Student Health and Counseling Center • Student clubs • Intramural sports teams • Field House gym and weight room membership (extra fee required) • Campus cultural activities • Student services assistance (academic advising, housing, banking, immigration, and health care)
University Bridge Program - Summer Only The University Bridge program gives you a chance to learn and practice academic and cultural skills that can help you succeed at an American university. Program Features While attending the Bridge program, you: • Research, write, document, and speak about academic assignments. • May observe California State University San Marcos classes or take Open University classes for an additional fee. • Have access to computer and language labs, Kellogg Library, Student Health and Counseling Center, and gym (extra fee). Program Requirements: To be a University Bridge student, you must begin a university degree program in the Fall semester. You must have a TOEFL score of 61 iBT (173 CBT or 500 paper). If you have a lower TOEFL score, you will be placed in the Intensive Academic Preparation Program.
Teacher Training Programs for International Teachers of English These short-term, intensive programs designed for groups focus on methods, materials, and techniques used to teach English as a Foreign Language. A two-month advance registration is recommended. To arrange a program for your group, contact alci@csusm.edu. Program Features: The Teacher Training Program provides opportunities for peer-teaching, discussion, and development of teaching materials and strategies. The program includes lectures and workshops, and class observations are also available. All sessions are taught by master teachers who have extensive experience in teaching EFL and ESL, teacher training, and curriculum development. As a participant, you review and improve your own language skills. You learn and practice techniques for teaching reading, writing, grammar, oral/aural skills, culture, video, and computer use. You also learn to develop effective lesson plans and tests. You also receive: • Full use of all University facilities, including the library, media center, and computer labs. • Orientation, placement, and an information packet. • Instructional supplies and materials. • A Certificate of Completion. • Accommodation in homestay (private bedroom with shared or private bath) and two meals per day.
