The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is the largest college-credit ESL program in the state of Ohio. We serve students on temporary visas, immigrants from all over the world, and native-born U.S. citizens whose first language is not English. Whether you have an advanced degree from your own country and need English proficiency to continue your profession, or you are a new college student, Tri-C's ESL courses will prepare you to participate more fully in your college and professional life.

ESL Program Tri-C offers 4 levels of college credit ESL courses—Basic, High Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced—in Grammar, Reading and Writing, and Speaking and Listening Comprehension. High Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced ESL courses are offered both day and evening. Basic courses are offered during the day at the Metro Campus, during the evening at Eastern Campus, and both day and evening at Western Campus. As participants in college credit programs, our students may apply for the kinds of government aid available to college students in general. At each level, students can take the full ESL program of 12 credits. Part-time study is possible; however, grammar classes must be taken before or at the same time as reading or writing and speaking classes. The ESL program is designed to move students directly into the College Composition courses in the English Department. Free tutoring is available, and instructors welcome students to consult with them during office hours. We are the largest college-credit ESL program in Ohio. As part of general education at Tri-C, the ESL program welcomes all high school graduates as well as non-high school graduates who are 18 years of age or older. Our ESL classes serve students of many ages and backgrounds – native-born U.S. citizens whose first language is not English, immigrants from all over the world, and others residing in the northeastern Ohio area on temporary visas.

Students in the Tri-C ESL program have access to the latest technologies including grammar software, MP3 players, and state-of the-art Sony recording software. Also, advanced speaking students can participate in our acclaimed Folktales Project. The ESL program offers numerous opportunities for campus involvement including multicultural / international clubs, conversation connection/conversation partners, picnics, and field trips. All activities provide opportunities for ESL and non-ESL students and faculty to celebrate the wealth of cultures in the Tri-C community.
Cuyahoga Community College operates a multi-campus college district in Northeast Ohio. With Cuyahoga County as its primary service area, Tri-C serves Cleveland and the surrounding communities. The major campuses include: the Eastern Campus in Highland Hills, the Metropolitan Campus of downtown Cleveland, the Western Campus in Parma Heights, and a new satellite facility in Westlake, Ohio. Tri-C houses its district administrative services at a separate location in Cleveland.
