English As A Second Language Program The English as a Second Language program, as part of Donnelly College's degree programs, is designed to give special training in the use of the English language to students who are not native speakers of English. The group includes international students aspiring to study in the United States, recent immigrants who need English to enhance their professional life, and American citizens who want to improve their education in English. The program assists students to cope with and adjust to different cultural patterns each semester by a balance of classroom instruction, enrichment experiences, and social gatherings. The English as a Second Language Program furthers the cause of intercultural understanding and international peace. The English as a Second Language Program offers open flexible admission. International students may attend for a period as short as one week or one month. This arrangement allows for the rapid polishing of skills for the partially fluent. According to the period of study, the tuition is pro-rated. Courses in English as a Second Language are offered at twelve different levels of difficulty in the following skill areas: Reading and Vocabulary Listening/Speaking and Pronunciation Composition Grammar Placement tests and interviews are administered to determine the level of difficulty in which each student should enroll. Entrance and exit tests are given at the beginning and at the end of each semester to determine student progress. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is administered at the end of each semester and exit interviews provide academic recommendations for each student. A TOEFL score of 500 and Composition score of 5 out of 6 are required for full participation in the degree program at Donnelly College. Credits for English as a Second Language courses do not apply to the degree program. Attendance and home study are required daily.
