What does EMU ESL Conditional Admission mean? When you have met all EMU admission requirements, EMU evaluates your TOEFL or MELAB score. If you have a TOEFL or MELAB score below the minimum required (see below), you will take the ESL Placement test to determine if and which ESL courses you need to take at EMU. Based on the ESL Placement Test, students who test into 100, 200, or 300 level courses will generally take only ESL classes until they reach the 400 or 500 level of ESL. When students are in the 400 or 500 level ESL classes, they can take other univesity courses at the same time as the ESL courses. Students must complete all the ESL courses in the sequence in which they place or submit a new TOEFL or MELAB score to the Office of Admissions two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. For each semester (including spring/summer) that a student is enrolled, the student must continue taking ESL courses until they have completed their required courses. ESL classes take priority over other courses until the student has fulfilled English proficiency requirements due to the conditional admission status of the student. If a student receives a grade of C- or lower in a course, the student must repeat that course in the next semester that he/she is enrolled, even if that means one or more previously registered courses must be dropped. * EMU Full Admission (no ESL required) 1.
