ESL Program
ESL Program The English as a Second Language (ESL) Certificate Program requires a total of 1,800 class room hours for completion. This total represents the Basic through Advanced levels of comprehension. Since the school has a rolling-admissions policy, students who successfully pass both verbal and written placement tests prior to commencing their initial course of study may be qualified to take classes at any level they are rightly placed into by the school thus, expediting the time required for completion of the program. Please also refer to the Transfer of Credit section of this Catalog. All students are required to complete a minimum of 800 hours in-residence at EA in order to receive a certificate. These hours must represent their final hours of study in the ESL program. ESL courses cannot be transferred to other programs to satisfy the certificate requirements of those programs. The ESL curriculum is primarily designed for students who plan to complete the certificate program through the Advanced level in order to allow exceptional learners the opportunity to advance to the academy level, if they desire. However, the curriculum is structured so that it also addresses the needs of learners who want to fortify their English proficiency for non-academic purposes. The program’s courses focus on the development of English language skills that are essential when communicating with native English speakers and English language learners from other cultural backgrounds. Courses are arranged according to five proficiency levels (basic, beginner, intermediate, high-intermediate and advanced). All students are required to take the EA Completion Examination prior to advancing to the next language proficiency level. These examinations have been designed to measure a student’s mastery of English at each level. Students who successfully complete the Advanced level of study will be awarded a Certificate of Proficiency in English as a Second Language. Students are required to complete four core courses at each proficiency level. These courses include the following: • Listening and Speaking • Grammar • Reading and Writing • Pronunciation, Discussion, Conversation The essence of Evergreen Academy’s curriculum is guided by four primary components which include: • The Educational Goals of the ESL Program; • The Skills and Content Objectives; • The Learning Process; and, • Assessment Methodology
TOEFL Preparation
TOEFL Preparation Evergreen Academy has developed an intensive preparatory class that addresses the four components of the TOEFL examination which include reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The following courses have been created to focus on these components: ESL 32 – TOEFL PREPARATION This course provides effective, time-proven test taking strategies. Numerous mock-test exercises will be provided based on the student’s desire for the iBT or pBT. ESL 33 – TOEFL READING This course explains tips, insights and strategies that help improve students’ reading comprehension level. It describes in detail the kinds of questions students will find on the TOEFL Reading Comprehension section. Lecture material and practice exercises are served with the goal to improve knowledge of and score on TOEFL Reading. ESL 34 – TOEFL WRITING This course delivers materials to help students improve in writing essays for the Test of Written English, a required part of the TOEFL test. Lectures are constantly provided and students’ writing essays are regularly scored, enabling them to observe incremental progress in their overall writing proficiency. ESL 35 – TOEFL VOCABULARY This course aims to prepare students for the TOEFL exam specifically by improving their vocabulary. It introduces and reinforces strategies that enable students to become independent learners of vocabulary in addition to teaching specific words that are useful in academic study. It presents and discusses TOEFL related vocabulary and links it with general knowledge to provide context as well as to add interest. Passive vocabulary (word recognition) is emphasized, while simultaneously active use of new vocabulary is encouraged. Class activities include test-taking strategies, focused practice exercises, error correction, vocabulary building, and practice tests. Homework consists of reading, studying examples, completing additional practice exercises and doing self-correction. ESL 36 – TOEFL DISCUSSION This course, besides providing students experience and confidence in being active discussion participants as well as a strong discussion leaders, and gives them the opportunity to build effective discussion skills while strengthening their oral and aural English skills that ultimately prepare them to take the TOEFL test successfully.
