1학기는 2개 세션으로 구성되며 봄학기, 여름학기, 가을학기에 개설됨. 봄/가을 학기는 학기당 14주, 여름학기는 10주임. [English for Academic Purposes] The ALI offers an intensive program for non-native speakers of English who need preparation in English before starting degree programs at IUP or other U.S. colleges and universities. EAP is a ten week program in the summer (session 1 and 2) and a fourteen week program in the fall and spring (sessions 1 and 2). All students take classes integrating in varying degrees listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary development. The curriculum for each group represents the most effective materials for learning to function in English in an academic setting. Classes are oriented to helping students become more active and interested learners with the objective of using what is learned outside and after the program. A new state-of-the-art language laboratory is used for listening comprehension, while computer assisted language learning is employed as well as other video-based language learning activities. The EAP program is appropriate for prospective undergraduate or graduate students who are seeking admission or are conditionally admitted to a college or a university. Students beyond admission requirements may enroll in order to improve their language abilities so as to excel in their subsequent academic programs. At the discretion of the director, a part-time program may be appropriate.
Want to study ESL before your bachelor's degree at IUP? You can receive a conditional admission to any bachelor's degree program at IUP even if you don't yet meet the language proficiency requirement. This special program lets you study for one or two semesters prior to entering a full time undergraduate degree program.
English for Specific Purposes (Special Arrangement Only) English for Specific Purposes (ESP) concentrates on using English effectively in specific academic fields such as business, chemistry, international studies, English linguistics and literature, physical education, and so forth. This program is suited to businesses in the region which desire training for executives or employees as well as groups from abroad, sponsored by government, industry, or international organizations. One type of ESP program is for TESOL teachers who need to improve their language preparation. This program is by special arrangement only.
Bridge Program The Bridge program provides advanced proficiency international students with an opportunity to start a credit program at the university while refining their English skills for the U.S. academic context. Admission to the Bridge Program requires a prior TOEFL score no lower than 20 points below the admission standard for the department to which a student intends to apply. Prospective IUP undergraduate students apply through the ALI and interview with the program director before applying to IUP. Prospective IUP graduate students must receive approval from a specific IUP graduate program before registering for the Bridge program. In addition, an ALI Bridge application and an interview with the ALI program director are required. Normally, a Bridge student takes three ALI courses (chosen with the Director in consultation with the student) along with one or two credit course (s) of their choice, depending on advisor's recommendation.
