INTERLINK Language Centers at Indiana State University (ISU) has been helping students achieve their goals since it came to campus in 1987. Located in Terre Haute, Indiana, INTERLINK provides its students quality training in English, culture and academic preparation. A majority of these students go on to ISU after meeting their needs at INTERLINK. Some students, however, study at INTERLINK for a variety of reasons. ISU is a major university with over 11,000 students, including approximately 500 international students from over 85 countries. A wide variety of programs are offered by ISU at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels in the College of Arts and Sciences and the professional schools of Business, Education, Health and Human Performance, Nursing and Technology. ESL Courses The INTERLINK curriculum emphasizes independent language learning, academic preparation, and cultural awareness; the language component of the curriculum focuses on listening, speaking, reading, writing, English for Science and Technology (EST), English for Law, and skills necessary for successful academic and social adjustment in the U.S. Core Courses: 20 hours per week These courses are offered at five different levels of proficiency in nine-week sessions; they study Communication Skills (CS) and Reading/Writing (RW), each a 10 hour block per week. At the elementary levels, an integrated skills approach is used in each class. In these levels the students receive a strong foundation in four language skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Instructors work together to provide learning experiences which integrate these four language skills in every class. In the intermediate level courses of Communication Skills and Reading/Writing, students build on the strong foundation achieved in the integrated skills classes. At these levels students develop strong reading skills to increase reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary. In writing, students learn how to compose essays in different rhetorical modes. Communication skills are refined to the point that students are able to discuss topics and make oral presentations. In the advanced Academic Preparation classes, students are exposed to materials/assignments which equip them with the skills necessary for success in the college/university environment. In these levels students are expected to understand and take notes on lectures, participate in discussions, make presentations, do library research, write research papers, and read sources related to their fields of study. At these advanced levels, students have the opportunity to take concurrent university classes for audit or credit. Modules: 3 hours per week In addition to the core courses, entering students receive a cultural orientation module while continuing students take modules on selected topics. Modules change from term to term, depending upon student interests and needs; they usually cover a wide range of subjects such as computer literacy, current events, public speaking, test-taking strategies, and others.
