English as a Second Language classes, offered through the Department of Language Skills, are designed for students who grew up speaking a language other than English as their primary language. Classes prepare students for academic success at LCC or for a transfer program. Once you have results from the LOEP test and know your level of English, you can choose any of the following courses:
ㆍ Integrated Skills courses focus on reading and vocabulary development.
ㆍ Writing Skills courses place emphasis on your own writing from sentences and paragraphs to different kinds of essays.
ㆍ Bridge to Academic Reading and Academic Reading Skills explore reading skills for academic purposes.
ㆍ Applied Grammar for Writing is designed for students who need to improve the grammar of their writing.
ㆍ Communication Skills and Focus on Pronunciation provide ample opportunities to practice listening and speaking.
ㆍ Computer Literacy for ESL Students course is designed for students who have never used a computer.
ㆍ Academic Listening/Notetaking will help you take advantage of lectures in English. * Note: GRAMMAR AND STUDY SKILLS ARE TAUGHT IN ALL CLASSES.

English Language Studies Program The English Language Studies Program (ELSP) provides intensive English instruction to students from throughout the world who want to improve their English language skills before beginning academic coursework at the college level. Lansing Community College advisors and ELSP instructors and staff will help you to create a schedule that fits into your life, as well as offer you opportunities to participate in cultural activities while living in the United States! ELSP offers intensive English instruction in: • Reading and speaking skills • Grammar and writing skills We offer multiple levels of curriculum in order to best accommodate each individuals needs.
