American Language Program ALP courses are designed to help students develop English skills they need for the university classroom and professional workplace. They also highlight practical English needed for everyday situations. Instruction is interactive, encouraging students to practice English through a variety of activities. Courses focus on academic reading and writing, as well as listening, speaking, and pronunciation. ALP students must be high school graduates and, in order to achieve maximum success, it is recommended that they have had at least 2 years of English study at the high school level. ALP courses do not carry university credit towards an academic degree. Students receive letter grades in each class that help determine their promotion from level to level in the program. They receive an official university grade of either Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. [Faculty] ALP’s full-time faculty are experienced ESL instructors trained in ESL teaching methods. They hold a minimum of a master’s degree in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), linguistics, or a related field. Most of our instructors speak other languages themselves and have had experience living and working abroad. [Length] ALP offers four instructional terms (quarters) each year: Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Each quarter is 10 weeks long. ALP offers four levels of instruction: elementary, intermediate, high intermediate, and advanced. A second quarter of study is available at each level, using different instructional materials, if necessary. [Hours] ALP classes meet Monday through Friday, between 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM, with an additional block of elective courses offered Monday through Friday, between 1:30 and 2:30 PM. Hence, students attend 4-5 hours of class daily. Optional activities are scheduled during late afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
