Intensive English Program Whether you study English to improve your academic success, achieve your career goals, or simply improve your life, ELI's course of study can help. Learn the essentials of grammar and writing; improve listening, speaking and pronunciation skills; and enhance your vocabulary through reading. With the help of an advisor, students create their own program of study by choosing from the courses listed below and from other courses that may be available. F-1 students must enroll in a minimum of 18 hours per week. There are four levels. It may take 7 or 14 weeks to complete each level (6 or 12 weeks in the summer terms). • 050 - Advanced Beginner • 060 - Low Intermediate • 070 - High Intermediate • 080 - Advanced [The Curriculum] Grammar and Writing Students learn grammar in the context of their own writing and through controlled exercises from the textbook. Students learn how to correct their mistakes and improve their writing by editing and revising their papers. Conversation and Listening Students improve conversational fluency and listening comprehension. This class focuses on communicating ideas in English. Audio, video and reading materials are used for conversation topics and for developing listening skills. Reading and Vocabulary Students learn different reading strategies and skills to increase vocabulary and reading comprehension. Students read a variety of newspaper and magazine articles, novels and stories, and academic texts to learn how to apply these strategies and skills. Pronunciation - Consonants and Vowels Students learn the basic techniques needed to produce correct sounds. Students are taught how to form consonant and vowel sounds. Individual and common pronunciation problems are addressed. The teacher will show each student how to make accurate sounds and will correct common pronunciation problems. Other students in the class will give feedback as well. Pronunciation - Intonation, Stress and Rhythm Students practice the 'music' of English. Students analyze how intonation, or the pitch of their voice, carries meaning. Students also learn the importance of word and sentence stress to being understood. Studying the rhythm of English helps students speak more clearly and fluently. Idioms Students increase their English fluency through the mastery of idioms. Students practice idioms by using news reports, radio programs, songs, role play exercises, presentations, magazines, and advertisements. Walking Tours of NY Students learn to research, organize, and lead tours to various sites around New York City. The students practice speaking, listening, and presentation skills while getting to know the most fascinating aspects of New York. American Culture Through Film Students explore American culture by looking at excerpts from movies and television episodes. Class discussions enable students to practice their speaking skills using the vocabulary introduced in the films. Exploring English Through the World of Art Students develop their analytical skills in the English language while studying paintings at famous museums, galleries and exhibitions in New York City. The class focuses on expressing ideas that the works of art inspire. Students use creative writing tasks to develop their imagination in the English language. TOEFL and GMAT Preparation Students learn the formats of the new iBT(Internet-based test) exams. Students practice test-taking strategies, time management and guessing techniques using past exams and simulated exams. Students review English grammar and vocabulary. (GMAT includes math review.) TOEFL Writing Students develop skills and strategies for writing the TOEFL essay. The skills students will learn include decoding the topics, speed outlining, development of ideas, introductory paragraphs, unified support paragraphs, concluding paragraphs, transitions, editing and sentence structure. Through weekly written assignments, students will become more comfortable and confident working within the 30-minute time frame.
Test Preparation [TOEFL Preparation] The ELI offers a 5 hour per week TOEFL Preparation Course for students to learn the format of and prepare for the Internet-based TOEFL test (iBT). Students will develop skills and strategies for writing the TOEFL essay. The instructor will cover areas of writing such as understanding the topic, speed outlining, idea development, introductory paragraphs, support paragraphs, concluding paragraphs, transitions, editing, and sentence structure. Students do weekly written assignments and become more comfortable and confident taking the 30-minute test. By the end of the course, students should be able to:
ㆍanticipate the format of each section to save time on reading directions.
ㆍrecognize question types and use a strategy to answer them.
ㆍapply sophisticated guessing techniques to questions they do not know.
ㆍpace themselves so that they don't run out of time at the end of a section.
ㆍapproach the exam with confidence. Students will use real tests and learn various test-taking strategies. A comprehensive review of English grammar and vocabulary specific to the TOEFL exam is included within the course curriculum. [GMAT Preparation] The ELI Offers a 9 hour per week GMAT Preparation Course specifically designed for non-native English speakers that is composed of 6 hours of Qualitative (verbal) and 3 hours of Quantitative (math) review per week. This course is designed for students who plan to take the Graduate Management Admission Test. Students will learn the format, typical questions and common test taking strategies to achieve the highest score on this test. The course will offer practice in the different sections of the test, including critical reasoning, reading comprehension, data sufficiency, problem-solving and sentence correction. Students will be able to anticipate the format of each section to save time on reading directions, recognize question types and use a strategy to answer them, apply sophisticated guessing techniques to questions they do not know, pace themselves so that they don't run out of time at the end of a section, approach the exam with confidence. A practice test will be given regularly throughout the term. Students will mark their own tests and be responsible for analyzing their own mistakes at home. Questions from that analysis will be discussed in class.
Pre-Undergraduate Program The Pre-Undergraduate program is a 12 (Summer) or 14 (Spring/Fall) week program. Advanced students with limited time can study for 6 (Summer) or 7 (Spring/ Fall) weeks. Academic Writing The purpose of this course is to introduce students to college level reading and writing and to explore various issues of American culture. Students are expected to read and think critically about assigned texts in order to develop thoughtful and effective written essays. Students learn how to compose different styles of essays - persuasive, cause/effect, narrative and etc. Students improve grammar in the context oftheir own writing. Most students in the course plan to continue at Pace and are helped to prepare for meeting the requirements of university-level writing courses. Academic Skills This course simulates a college classroom in order to provide the skills necessary to succeed in an academic setting. Students write an American-style research paper, learn academic reading skills and test-taking strategies, as well as listen effectively and take notes during an academic lecture.
Pre-Graduate Program Many international students want to study for graduate degrees in the U.S., but are concerned about their English proficiency and cultural differences.Success in an American graduate school requires a special set of skills. The Pre-Graduate Program can help you prepare for the American graduate school experience. The Pre-Graduate Program is the only one of its kind in New York City. Students begin to prepare for their MBA or other graduate degrees by learning the skills for academic success. In the Pre-Graduate Program students learn to: • Participate actively in group discussions • Work on team projects • Conduct library and internet research • Organize American-style research papers • Apply internet skills to class projects • Deliver sophisticated, clear, and confident presentations • Listen effectively and take notes during an academic lecture • Read for accuracy, meaning, and speed Our experienced instructors use innovative, student-centered methods to teach. Students learn the academic skills they will use in graduate school. Students learn to become active members of an American graduate program. The classes are small, so students are able to receive the attention they deserve. All students in the Pre-Graduate program can use Pace University's library and computer lab facilities. In the multimedia lab students can practice their skills with TOEFL and GMAT preparation software. Every student receives assistance on their graduate application materials from the Pre-Graduate Advisor. [Curriculum] The Pre-Graduate Program is a 12 (Summer) or 14 (Spring/Fall) week program. Advanced students with limited time can study for 6 (Summer) for 7 (Spring/ Fall) weeks. Students choose from the courses listed below and from other available courses. ELI F-1 students and Pre-Masters students must enroll in 18 hours per week. Pre-Graduate Academic Skills: (4.5 hours per week) Students learn the critical thinking, research, and writing skills needed in an American graduate school. Students work on projects taken from American business and culture. Graduate school professors and business professionals give guest lectures. The lectures enable students to perfect their new skills. Pre-Graduate Communication Skills: (4.5 hours per week) Students learn and practice skills for group discussions and class presentations. Students work on real graduate projects, and use their new skill to organize, research, and deliver professional presentations. Case Studies and the Art of Problem Solving This course focuses on the case study method, the dominant tool for teaching in MBA programs. Students solve logistical and ethical problems taken from the real world, learn how to analyze the problems individually and in groups, make decisions and present their solutions to the class. Learning these skills is essential to anyone hoping to succeed in business school. American Business Culture Through class activities, guest speakers, films, Internet research, and team presentations, students learn the values and customs of American business life. The class focuses on teamwork to solve business problems and present solutions as a group.
