The IELP is part of Portland State University, a community-oriented urban university with a diverse student and teacher population. The IELP offers you full immersion and integration into PSU while you improve your English skills. Being part of a large university allows you to take advantage of campus resources. PSU is located in the heart of Portland, a beautiful, clean, and safe place to study and experience American culture. We offer intensive instruction in several programs that you can choose from. Your learning is supported by IELP Resources, such as a Learning Center, Conversation Partner Program, Tutors and Advisors. Our IELP Student Life Office organizes activities outside the classroom that help you make great friends and life-long connections with people. If you are an admitted PSU student without a TOEFL or IELTS score, we are your pathway program into PSU. You will be fully immersed in campus life while improving your English skills and preparing yourself for academic success. Once you’ve reached the advanced level, you have the opportunity to take one or two advisor-approved PSU classes before graduating from the IELP. This allows for a smooth transition into becoming a PSU student.

Academic English Program (AEP) Students learn in a rigorous and dynamic environment to build strong written, reading comprehension, and oral communication skills that they can use in university and professional settings. Students who complete the advanced level have the English skills needed for success in the United States. The Academic English Program accepts students beginning through advanced levels. Academic English Program Eligibility Requirements . Be at least 17 years of age or older . Completed secondary school or high school equivalent . No minimum language requirement!
Communication and Culture The Communication and Culture program is for students who want to learn about American culture, develop their conversation skills, and become more confident in communicating in English. Classes focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing, but your instructors will also explain grammar, teach vocabulary, and incorporate authentic English through books, movies, news, music, TV shows, and more.

ㆍHomework: 15 to 20 hours per week [Classes] Writing | Social Media: Interacting Online Social media is an important aspect of American life. Explore, research, and experience social media on the Internet while improving your computer communication skills in English. Participate in weekly online discussions and create your own blog. Writing | Community Reporting Explore American culture at PSU and in the Portland community by creating a class newsletter. Interview interesting people, contribute photos, and write about your experiences abroad. Share your progress and experiences with friends, family, and the community around you. Listening | Multimedia Listening Sharpen your listening skills and become more familiar with American culture through music, movies, TV shows, Internet videos, radio programs, extended conversations, and live entertainment. Themes for this class alternate between pop and Portland culture. Reading | Cultural Themes in Reading Explore American culture through literature, group activities, and discussion. Connect to the community through engaging activities such as field trips, listening to guest speakers, and individual projects. Themes include: Native American, African American, Immigrant Experience, Americans Abroad, and more. Speaking | Practically Speaking: Conversational English Increase your conversational fluency by learning strategies for oral communication, common American English words and phrases, and other cultural knowledge required to navigate everyday interactions. Practice what you learn with English-speaking assistants in the classroom. Speaking | Communication through Volunteering Experience Portland culture and develop your English skills by volunteering in the community. Work on class projects with PSU students, elementary schools, and other community partners to practice interacting with others and sharing ideas and experiences.
Pre-Pathway program The Pre-Entry Program prepares students with limited English ability for the Foundational English classes. Pre-Entry students receive extra tutoring support and structure to help them develop their basic English skills. After successfully passing all of their Pre-Entry Program courses, students enter the Foundational English Program. (Note: Students must pass the Pre-Entry Program within two terms.)
ㆍClass time: 23 hours per week
ㆍHomework: 15-18 hours per week [Pre-Entry Program Courses] Grammar and Writing Learn to identify parts of speech and sentences. Study and practice the basics of capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and good penmanship. Write beginning-level paragraphs using simple present and past tense. Reading Develop crucial English reading, phonics, and dictionary skills. Practice extensive reading and learn decoding strategies to become more fluent, achieve basic comprehension, and increase vocabulary. Speaking and Listening Practice understanding and being understood in simple conversational situations. Improve skills by listening to conversations and interviews, asking and answering questions, giving information using both simple present and past tenses, and learning proper word and sentence-level pronunciation. American Culture and Academic Life (ACAL) Use reading, grammar, writing, and communication skills to learn about the IELP, PSU, and Portland. Common topics include health care, safety, academic expectations, and immigration issues.
Portland State University Pathway Program . 6 month or 9 month program available . One application process for PSU and the Pathway Program . 4 Start times per year . Completion satisfies the program to meet PSU's undergraduate English requirement . Available for any undergraduate major . Students take PSU classes concurrently with IELP classes . Academic Communication for Graduate Students These specialized courses are designed to support graduate students in refining the communication skills necessary for success in American master's and doctoral programs. In these classes, students can work on improving their academic writing and presentation skills, develop strategies to effectively participate in American graduate-level classes, and receive support in adjusting to the culture and pressures of academia.
