The Program in American Language Studies (PALS) is the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Rutgers University-Newark. PALS and Rutgers have a long established relationship, working together for over 32 years, providing exceptional English language teaching and assistance to international students and community citizens on the most diverse campus in the United States, Rutgers-Newark. PALS students work towards achieving English proficiency in a communicative setting with a recently renovated language lab, while having most university services available to them, including clubs, gym membership, parking and activities. Running six sessions annually, PALS offers classes in intensive English study, English for Academic Purposes, TOEFL and IELTS test preparation and administration, and Accent Awareness. PALS students are encouraged to participate in ESL club activities through field trips in and around New York City, including museums, parks and local landmarks, which give them opportunities to practice their English in authentic contexts with expert speakers. Additionally, PALS students can participate in any of the 50 clubs and organizations on campus. Our instructors come from a variety of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds and either have or are working towards advanced degrees in Applied Linguistics, TESL, English or other related fields.

Intensive ESL Program This is PALS' core program—immersion English language study designed to expose students to all the skills necessary to develop and improve their ability and confidence in speaking, reading, and writing English. Students take these courses with a variety of intentions: to enter an American university, to improve their job opportunities, to study toward or work in an international career, and more. The Intensive ESL Program has six levels: Beginner Basic Low Intermediate High Intermediate Low Advanced High Advanced New students are placed according to their ability, which is determined by a placement exam given before each session begins. The Intensive ESL Program is offered over six sessions per academic year (September–August), with each session lasting seven weeks. If a student starts at the Beginner level and passes all their classes each session, they can expect to finish the entire Intensive ESL Program in one year. Students who start at higher levels (as determined by the required placement exam) can expect to complete the program more quickly as long as they are successful in each class/level per session. Classes are run like American university courses and include lectures, homework, in-class presentations, computer lab study, tests and quizzes, etc. Students are graded on all their work and exams, and the final grade of a class determines whether they will move up in level or repeat a course until they are successful in passing it.
Advanced Academic Program (AAP) The AAP is the highest level of ESL study that PALS offers. It is designed for international students who are planning to enter college and want abundant practice with assignments similar to those that would be required in university courses. This program is intended to prepare individuals for the rigor of work at the college or university level; students taking the AAP learn to think critically and creatively as they conduct research into various scholarly context. The AAP is a seven-week program that meets for 21 hours per week. Students take three intensive courses for a total of 18 hours' study; they also choose an elective worth 3 hours' study. COURSES Advanced Academic Writing and Research Advanced Academic Reading for Research Advanced Academic Presentation Skills Advanced Academic Grammar Elective SCHEDULE Each course meets two days a week from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. A lunch break in between classes is provided.
TOEFL Preparation Program The TOEFL Preparation Program is an intensive seven-week course (24 hours per week) that focuses on all of the skills needed to successfully pass the TOEFL. Placement into Program Required You must place into the TOEFL Preparation Program through the PALS' placement exam. Students who have completed a level of High Intermediate or higher in the Intensive ESL Program may also enroll in this program. Admission to Rutgers–Newark At the end of the course, students take a final TOEFL exam in class. Students who score 79 or above on this test taken as part of the TOEFL Preparation Program can use this score in their applications to Rutgers–Newark for undergraduate study (not graduate). Please note: A score of 79 or higher is not a guarantee by PALS of a student's admission to the University. Full acceptance into Rutgers–Newark will depend on the student's fulfillment of other university admission requirements.
IELTS Preparation Program IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to measure the language ability of candidates who want to work or study where English is the language of communication. IELTS is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment, covering the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is recognized by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA. Many professional organizations, immigration authorities, and other governments also recognize IELTS testing. The IELTS test has two forms—which one you take depends on your reasons for testing: Academic Test/Module For entry into undergraduate or postgraduate education courses For professional reasons General Training Test/Module For enrollment into vocational or training courses in secondary schools For immigration purposes
