The Texas A&M University English Language Institute (ELIN) began in 1966 as a short-term summer program for 22 agricultural students from Latin America. ELIN has grown into a fully-accredited year-round intensive English program collaborating annually with departments across the Texas A&M University campus to provide English language instruction and academic preparation for hundreds of undergraduate and graduate international students from all across the globe. The program is administered by a director and assistant director and is supported by full and part-time non-tenure-track faculty members. From its humble beginnings, the TAMU English Language Institute is now nationally recognized as a top intensive English program in the United States.

ESL Program The ELI offers six core subject skill classes: Composition, Grammar, Listening Skills, Oral Skills, Reading, and Vocabulary. First-semester students participate in a semester-long orientation course in American Culture and Customs class. A TOEFL preparation class is offered each semester for students who are enrolled in a majority of intermediate and advanced courses. There is an extra charge for this course. Students enrolled full time in the ELI program can expect 18 to 21 hours of classroom instruction each week, Monday through Friday. Additional time in the language laboratory is available and may be necessary depending on individual student needs and instructor requirements. In addition to the four core language skills, special attention is given to college readiness skills. Students are given instruction in study techniques, note taking methods, library procedures, and academic examination methods. Students are expected to check assignments and emails daily on elearning.tamu.edu. Students are encouraged to evaluate and comment on their classes at midterm and at the end of the semester at pica.tamu.edu. Classes are held in the Academic Building and other locations on the A&M campus. ELI students have full student privileges to access the libraries, Student Computing Center, Recreation Center, and the Beutel Health Center. Students have access to wireless internet all over campus
