Founded in 1979, the English Language Institute (ELI) offers high-quality instruction in English as a second language (ESL). The ELI has helped numerous people from countries across the globe expand their career options, improve their academic studies, and enrich their personal lives. ELI students not only become proficient and confident users of English but also gain practical insight into living in the United States. The English Language Institute (ELI) is a special service offered to students whose native language is not English. The personnel and programs of the ELI are available to help international students reach an acceptable level of English proficiency before they begin full-time academic course work. The ELI operates on a schedule of two 8-week semesters and a summer session. The ELI first determines the level of a new student's English proficiency to see whether the student should participate in ELI-English classes. The ELI then enrolls the student for the appropriate language classes.

English for Academic Purposes Program Founded in 1979, The ELI's English for Academic Purposes Program (EAP) serves two groups of people: students who are preparing to enroll in a university degree program in the United States and people who desire an intensive approach to language learning. Students in the EAP program come from all over the world. Many are international students on F-1 student visas; some are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Full-time students in the EAP Program attend 20 hours of noncredit classes each week for 15 weeks in the Fall and Spring Semesters and for 8 weeks in the Summer Session. If you are a citizen of another country, a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident and are looking for an intensive language learning experience, our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program is for you. Designed for people who plan to earn a university degree in the United States, this program focuses on the English skills required for success in university coursework. Full-time students in the EAP program study for 20 hours a week in daytime noncredit courses that address four areas of English: reading, writing, listening comprehension, and grammar/speaking. Applicants from other countries will be issued SEVIS I-20 travel documents so that they can get an F-1 student visa for entry to the U.S.
The U-ADEPT Testing Program Constructed in 2004, The University of Akron Developed English Proficiency Test, or U-ADEPT, assesses the speaking ability of international teaching assistants at The University of Akron. Graduate students who pass the U-ADEPT are certified as proficient enough in spoken English to provide classroom-related services in their graduate departments. With the adoption of the U-ADEPT, The University of Akron allows prospective international teaching assistants to demonstrate their ability in spoken English in one of two ways:
ㆍWith a passing score on the U-ADEPT.
ㆍWith a score of 23 or higher on the speaking section of the Internet-based TOEFL Test.
