Intensive English Program *6 levels of study (beginning to advanced) New students take the ELI Placement Exam on the first day of the session and are placed in the appropriate level for each core class (Reading/Writing, Speaking/Listening, Structure). See our Program Design page for more information. *20 to 24 hours of class per week Full-time students take 20 hours per week in core/elective classes and from 2 to 4 more hours per week in Culturally Speaking (not offered in summer) and Friday Afternoon Seminars. Classes typically meet between 8:00 am and each 4:30 pm Monday – Thursday and between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon each Friday. *Professional, experienced teachers All ELI faculty members have master’s degrees in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). Many have also lived and taught outside of the United States. *6 sessions per year, each lasting 8 or 6 weeks Each session in the fall and spring lasts 8 weeks, and each session in the summer lasts 6 weeks. Students may enroll for one session or for multiple sessions. *Starting dates in January, March, May, June, August, October For exact dates, see our Calendar and Costs page. *Half sessions available Half sessions last 4 weeks (fall and spring) or 3 weeks (summer) and begin on the same dates as full sessions.
English plus Business Program (EBP) The English + Business Program is offered two times each year by The University of Alabama (UA) English Language Institute (ELI) in cooperation with the UA Culverhouse College of Commerce. This three-week program is offered each January and July for non-native speakers of English who wish to improve their English-language skills as well as learn about business concepts and practices in the United States. Key features of the English + Business Program include the following: ∙Provides training in English and business for non-native speakers of English ∙Takes place for three weeks each January and July ∙Includes 40+ hours of English instruction and 10-15 hours of business lectures ∙Includes two visits to local corporations Program of Study Intensive English (40+ hours of instruction): Participants take part in three customized business English classes, which include business negotiating and presentation skills; writing, speaking, listening and note-taking skills; as well as business-specific vocabulary and discussion based on lectures and readings. (It is recommended that participants in the English + Business Program have a high intermediate level of English or higher). Each student’s proficiency in English and appropriate ELI level of instruction will be determined by means of the ELI Placement Exam, which is administered at the beginning of the program. English instruction takes place during each weekday morning. Business Lectures/Workshops (9 hours of instruction): The UA Culverhouse College of Commerce as well as other University of Alabama colleges and departments offer between six and eight business-related lectures. Each lecture focuses on a different area of business study related to the following general topics: Economics Risk Management Finance Accounting Supply Chain Operations Management Business Commuication Trade between Alabama and the world Lectures are scheduled in the afternoons two or three days per week and will be held in C&BA or other classrooms on the UA campus. Each lecture is scheduled for approximately two hours, including time for questions and discussion. Corporate Visits (2-3 visits): One of the corporate visits is typically to Mercedes-Benz US International, which is located in Tuscaloosa County. Other possible visits are Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in Montgomery, Regions Bank (a Fortune 500 Company), Flower Foods, Cadence Bank, or other local corporations in the following fields: agriculture/aquiculture (e.g., catfish farming) banking electronics food hospitality medical/health care steel milling Cultural Activities: A welcome reception for the participants is held at the beginning of the program in order to allow the students to meet and socialize with the English teachers, the business lecturers, and other program staff members. A closing ceremony, including a formal dinner, is held at a popular local restaurant. At the closing, each participant receives a group photo, a certificate of participation, and a UA T-shirt. Housing: Program participants live in UA campus residence halls with roommates. Depending on space availability, participants room either with each other or with other UA/ELI students. Meals: Participants may eat their meals in cafeterias located on the UA campus or in restaurants located within walking distance of the campus. Access to Facilities and Events: Participants will have full access to all facilities, resources, and events (academic, cultural, and sporting) at UA.
