The Department of English of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Louisville offers a full-time program of post-secondary English for international students who expect to enroll in an academic program at the University of Louisville or another American college or university. We accept applications from students who have completed secondary school and whose academic records suggests readiness to undertake a rigorous course of language study. Our course is intensive and applicants must have prior formal instruction in English. Applicants without previous formal instruction in English, but with several years' permanent residence in the United States, may qualify for admission. We review applications and admit qualified students throughout the year for the fall and spring semesters. During the semester, students attend classes for 20 hours a week (Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.) in reading, vocabulary, writing, structure, and listening/speaking.

Intensive English Language Program The goals of the Intensive English program at the University of Louisville are to provide students with:
ㆍan ability to speak, write, and understand English in an academically oriented environment
ㆍan ability to write in English at a level required of university students
ㆍknowledge of American culture and customs
ㆍan understanding of American post-secondary educational systems The Intensive English program is structured to provide the following:
ㆍ3 levels of instruction: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
ㆍfull-time classroom instruction: 20 hours per week (4 classes per day, 5 days per week) for 15 weeks
ㆍpractice in listening, conversation, reading, writing, and grammar
ㆍcomputer-aided language learning integrated into classroom instruction
ㆍqualified and experienced teachers who have Masters degrees in linguistics and TESOL
ㆍopportunities for campus-related activities
ㆍindividual help when needed
ㆍUofL admissions advising
