The Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) at the University of New Mexico is an intensive English program designed for international students and/or professionals who wish to develop college-level skills in listening, reading, writing, grammar and speaking in order to prepare for US academic studies or for work purposes. CELAC does not offer beginning or basic level classes in English as a Second Language. Applicants must be at least eighteen years old and have a high school diploma with a minimum GPA of 2.0. CELAC students can easily transition into University studies at UNM upon successfully completing CELAC classes and receiving a passing score on the institutional TOEFL exam given in our program. Intensive English Program The Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) is the University of New Mexico's intensive English program. We are a government approved SEVIS I-20 issuing program for international students. Our program highlights are listed below, but we are also happy to help you with any questions or concerns you may have at celac@unm.edu or +1 (505) 277-4032. • Conversation, Grammar, Reading and Writing classes offered at 5 levels • 16-week semester, 8- or 4-week summer sessions; special short-term programs available upon request • Classes meet Monday – Friday from 9:00 am-1:00 pm or from 1:00-5:00 pm with a total of 20 hours of instruction per week • Part-time study available to those that are not on student F-1 visa. • Intimate class sizes, 8-15 students • CELAC teachers have substantial ESL teaching experience in the U.S. and abroad • Easy transition into University studies for students who satisfactorily complete the English proficiency exams and pass CELAC classes • Part-time enrollment in UNM academic classes while in CELAC is possible once students reach the Academic Bridge level
