Intensive English Programs (IEPs), like ESL Services, exist in one form or another on the campuses of all major research universities in the US. The University of Texas at Austin (UT) has supported an ESL program in the International Office, with the exception of 1985–1992, since the early 1960s. English as a Second Language Services exemplifies The University of Texas’ long-standing commitment to international education and to the promotion of global understanding and goodwill. As part of the University, ESL Services provides instruction and programs that are critical to UT’s mission. Specifically, ESL Services offers current and future international students and scholars high-quality English language training and orientation programs to assist them in attaining better proficiency in English and in broadening their cultural awareness in order to ensure their success at the University of Texas. In addition to offering classes to help matriculated international students improve their English skills, ESL Services participates as a critical component of language-focused academic programs by providing opportunities for learning, collaboration, and research. These essential activities, conducted by current graduate students in a variety of departments, include classroom observations; internships; and data collection for dissertations, theses, and other academic publications. Brief introduction to our programs and instructors; [ITA program] The ITA program is designed to assure that international teaching assistants and assistant instructors can meet the linguistic demands required of them. As part of the ITA program, ESL Services supervises initial oral screening, conducts an ITA workshop, and provides courses for those who conditionally pass or fail the assessment. [Graduate-level courses] The graduate-level courses we offer include intermediate and advanced oral communication and academic writing. The students in these courses are typically fulfilling graduate school or departmental requirements; others self-select into our services. [Academic English Program (AEP)] This program is designed for students planning to enter a Master's or Ph.D. program at The University of Texas or another US university. AEP specifically prepares students for graduate study. [English Language Program (ELP)] The program serves undergraduates, visiting scholars, businesspeople, and family members of UT faculty and students. Course content focuses on communication for study, business, and daily life. All of ESL Services' 42 current instructors have graduate degrees (9 Ph.D. and 33 Master), speak at least one foreign language and have taught, traveled, or lived outside the US. They also have a minimum of five years of teaching experience, with many boasting more than 20 years.

English Language Program (ELP) If you need to expand your English for communication, study, business, or pleasure, ELP is designed for you. ELP students include undergraduates, visiting scholars, business people, and family members of UT faculty and students. ELP students can choose intensive or part-time study, depending on their visa status. We offer 7 levels of instruction, from beginning to advanced. Classes have 11 to 12 students. Intensive Study Intensive study in the ELP Program includes the four core courses shown below. Classes meet 5 days a week for a total of 18 hours weekly. There will be daily homework. Intensive students are also entitled to

ㆍGrammar and Idioms Test Preparation Electives Our TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT test preparation courses focus on both content and test-taking strategies. We also offer a pronunciation class that will help you speak more clearly, focusing on individual sounds as well as word-level and sentence-level patterns. There is a language proficiency prerequisite for elective courses.
Academic English Program (AEP) If you plan to enter a Master's or Ph.D. program at The University of Texas at Austin or another university in the United States, AEP is designed for you. Your classmates will already hold at least an undergraduate degree and have definite academic goals. AEP serves people with low-intermediate, intermediate, high-intermediate, and advanced English proficiency. Intensive Academic Study In addition to expanding your language skills, AEP specifically prepares you for graduate study. You will be trained to lead and participate in seminars, work effectively in a team, understand complex, fast-paced lectures, write documented academic papers, read a variety of authentic materials, and give presentations. Core AEP Classes In order to quickly prepare you for graduate work in English, your classes will meet five days a week with daily homework. Classes meet for a total of 18 hours weekly. AEP courses concentrate on the areas of academic writing, listening/speaking, reading/discussion, and grammar/idioms. Classes have an average of 11 to 12 students. We make every effort to individualize your learning experience. Our current class schedule for AEP is Monday/Wednesday/Friday: 9:00-10:30 Class 1 11:00-12:30 Class 2 2:00-3:30 Class 3 Tuesday/Thursday: 10:30-12:45 Class 4 Elective Courses Our TOEFL and GRE preparation courses focus on both content and test-taking strategies. We also offer a Pronunciation class that will help you speak more clearly, focusing on stress and intonation patterns as well as individual sounds. There is a language proficiency prerequisite for most elective courses. Elective courses meet 4 hours per week for 7 weeks (8 1/2 weeks during the summer). Our current elective schedule for AEP students is Tuesday/Thursday 8:30-10:20 AM Colloquia Specially arranged for AEP, these lectures on a variety of topics feature speakers from the university and Austin. Admission Requirements You must hold a university degree AND show at least low-intermediate proficiency through our placement test or a TOEFL score (minimum of iBT 38 to enter our lowest level AEP class). Students who do not meet these requirements will be placed in ELP. Admission to AEP does not guarantee admission to The University of Texas at Austin or any other university.
CELTA Program The CELTA stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages. This is the most widely recognized certificate program for teaching English. It is a 120-hour course, which includes six hours of supervised teaching experience. The CELTA has four main components and covers five main topics. The components consist of input sessions, teaching practice, guided lesson planning, and feedback on teaching. The CELTA gives you the following:

ㆍProvides you with a range of practical skills you can employ in various teaching situations Components In the intensive CELTA, each day is divided into four main areas. During input sessions, trainees are instructed on an gain knowledge about various areas of language teaching, including lesson planning, teaching various skills such as writing, grammar, pronunciation, speaking, etc., looking for a finding jobs, how to give feedback to students, etc. The rest of the sessions are purely practical. During guided lesson planning, trainees plan an ESL lesson, and one of the tutor assists them with their lesson planning. During teaching practice, trainees give their lesson to a group of ESL students. Finally, the tutor gives the trainees feedback on their lesson after the training session. Topics

ㆍDeveloping teaching skills and professionalism Assessment You are assessed throughout the course. There are no exams or final exam; rather, you are evaluated based on your ongoing performance as a teacher. There are two main ways you are evaluated: [Teaching practice] You will complete 6 hours of teaching practice spread over approximately 10 different lessons, which you will plan and implement. You are given feedback on each of these practice teaching sessions. [Written assignments] You will complete a total of 4 written assignments over the course of the CELTA: one on classroom skills, one on the system of the English language, one on language skills, and one on adult learners. An independent assessor appointed by Cambridge comes near the end of each course to consult on grades. Each student is awarded either a 'Pass,' a 'Pass B,' a 'Pass A,' or in some cases, a 'Fail.' Please note that 'Pass B' and 'Pass A' are not analogous to the American system of 'B' and 'A,' and a simple 'Pass' is considered very good.
