The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM) offers several ESL programs to assist students to improve English proficiency for university study in English. Or choose ESL at UWM to improve your English for professional or personal goals. Before starting university study: • Choose the Intensive English Program to gain the level of English proficiency required before beginning academic study. • Do you have conditional admission to UWM? Enroll in the Intensive English Program to achieve the English proficiency required for academic study. Undergraduate students: • Choose ESL Writing Courses for credit to fulfill the undergraduate general education requirement (GER) in English. • Do you have dual admission to UWM? Enroll in the Intensive English Program to fulfill your English requirement: part-time ESL Intensive English (2 classes). Graduate students: • Are you an international teaching assistant whose native language is not English? • Choose ESL Writing Courses to improve your proficiency in writing. • Choose the non-credit Oral Skills course to improve speaking and presentation skills. • For international teaching assistants whose native language is not English: take the MITAA and Oral Skills course if necessary. Accreditation UWM is a public university of the State of Wisconsin and is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Intensive English Program is also accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation Memberships: The English as a Second Language Program also has membership in the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) and Study Wisconsin.

Intensive English The Intensive English Program offers intensive, focused instruction for 20 hours every week. This program includes work in Listening Comprehension, Reading and Writing. An advanced level combines all of these for more in-depth academically oriented training. All the classes are non-credit. There are four courses, each corresponding to one level:
ㆍLevel 1 - Listening: Increase comprehension of spoken English.
ㆍLevel 2 - Reading: Increase reading comprehension and fluency.
ㆍLevel 3 - Writing: Write English that is accurate and comprehensible.
ㆍLevel 4 - Immersion: Integrate all language skills. Courses are taught in one-month units:
ㆍ3 core classes that focus on one skill in order to improve proficiency
ㆍ1 elective class, taught in one week units. - Topics include grammar, pronunciation, conversation, cinema, TOEFL or IELTS preparation, vocabulary, spelling, etc. - Students can choose a new topic each week.
ㆍ20 hours of instruction per week, including work in the Language Resource Center.
ㆍClasses meet every day, Monday through Friday.

The IEP includes regular cultural enrichment activities such as English Conversation Table, Conversation Partners, and the Dining Out Club. An organized outing is planned each month, such as attending a major league baseball (Brewers) or basketball (Bucks) game; going to the theater or museums; visiting Madison, the capital of Wisconsin, or Chicago, Illinois; going bowling, canoeing or snow tubing. IEP students also are welcome to attend all events on the UWM campus, and there are opportunities to participate in volunteer activities.
