Welcome to the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) at Utah State University (USU). Learn the English language and cultural skills you need for academic study at the university. Students who complete our program do not need a TOEFL score to take classes at USU. IELI began in 1972. It is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) [2008-2017] and is a member of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP) and UCIEP, a Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs.

IELI has four levels of instruction. Classes focus on language and cultural skills needed for successful university study. Each level takes one-15 week semester (or one 10-week summer session) to complete. Beginning level students require four semesters to complete the program. Other students require less time depending upon their initial level of placement. Students meet in classes 18 hours per week. Some classes at levels 1 and 2 are multi-level. Students who place into level 1 repeat these classes for additional credit upon advancing to level 2. The content of the courses varies from term-to-term. Classes at all levels are credit bearing. Depending upon major department, undergraduate students may apply up to 18 IELI credits as elective credit towards graduation.
