Prepare for the rigors of graduate school and polish your academic writing and speaking skills. [Classes] Writing for Postgraduate Students • Practice academic research papers, drawing upon your own area of research and interest • Learn the conventions of academic writing (citing sources, intellectual property rights, making use of the Internet, scholarly publications) • Discuss assigned readings that model processes and strategies used in academic writing Academic Speaking and Presentation Skills • Develop active listening skills using conversation, interviews, media broadcasts, lectures, and films • Learn the conventions of presentations, roundtable or panel discussions and small-group conversation • Increase your academic, professional and everyday vocabulary Sound and Structure of Colloquial English Learn to speak clearly, sound more American, and increase your effectiveness in spoken communication. Study and practice accent reduction, including rhythm, intonation, the sounds of English, and vocal variety. Learn techniques for creating a professional-sounding voice, the use of formal and casual speech patterns, and dynamic communication strategies. Speaking Fluently: Expanding Creative, Descriptive and Innovative Language Research has shown that language skills improve dramatically when learners are not focused on the specifics of structure and correctness of speech. Instead, when one is “distracted” by imagination and “play”, language improves rapidly and dramatically. This course takes you “outside the box” of traditional presentation skills or group discussions, and allows you to explore your creative and imaginative spirit while unconsciously improving vocabulary, pronunciation and critical thinking skills. We will discuss art, photography, literature and personal interests as catalysts for enriching language and making meaning. [Evening Elective] Intense Vocabulary Workshop Improve your English vocabulary! This course uses two major perspectives, one a roots (mostly Greek and Latin) and etymology approach, and the other a semantic family approach. The goal is twofold: Students learn a lot of sophisticated and "academic" vocabulary and, more importantly, build both heuristics for understanding novel vocab and a nuanced understanding of the historical, etymological, and semantic freight implicit in any given English word. [Sample Daily Schedule] Sound and Structure of Colloquial English MTWTHF 9:00 - 10:30 Academic Speaking and Presentation Skills MTWTHF 10:45 - 12:15 Writing for Postgraduate Students MW 2:00 - 4:15 Living Language: American Interactions F 2:00 - 4:15 Intensive Vocabulary Workshop TTH 7:00 - 8:30 Individual schedules may vary.

[Morning Classes] The U.S. Legal System and the Constitution Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm The morning program offers a content-based course that is taught by an attorney and professor of law. The lectures and Socratic method of teacher-student dialogue are intended to provide an authentic learning situation that mirrors a lecture class in a US law school. Course content includes civil procedure, contracts, professional responsibility, constitutional law, criminal law, torts, and corporate law, among others. Contemporary US legal principles and their historic origins are presented including the right to freedom of speech, religion, privacy, and civil rights. Students also prepare their own arguments based on their reading of an actual case and participate in teams of four in a Moot Court debate before a panel of student judges and the professor. To complement class sessions, planned field trips include:
ㆍA federal and state correctional facility (prison)
ㆍState and federal courts to observe a criminal trial and to meet with judges before and after the trial

The course also provides instruction in reading and interpreting a legal contract, as well as writing a case brief, business letters, a contract, and a research paper among other legal formats. Students practice writing in the ‘irac’ format, which is used for law school essay exams and on the Bar, and participate in an online debate. Finally, students prepare a simulated conference for which they conduct research, give formal presentations, and write reactions. Refine your persuasive writing and argumentation. Oral Communications Skills (Two afternoons a week) This class focuses on effective speaking in a variety of legal contexts including interviews, discussions, debates, and re-enactments of courtroom scenes. Students practice increased clarity of expression in a setting that emphasizes collaborative learning. The traditional role and image of lawyers as described in Anthony Kronman’s The Lost Lawyer is discussed in depth along with portrayals of lawyers in excerpts from films.
