What to Do If You Lose Valuables During Language Study Abroad

Hello everyone

A-Work Study Abroad here :)

The language study abroad program you arrived at with such high hopes!

It would be wonderful if everything went as planned,

but especially when living abroad,

things often don't turn out the way you expect,

and losing your belongings happens from time to time.

If it's something unimportant, it's not a big deal,

but when you lose the most important things — your passport or money —

knowing in advance how to handle it

will help you solve the problem calmly, without panicking!

So we hope you'll read through today's post carefully

and be prepared for whatever might happen.

< If You Lose Your Passport >

A passport is your ID that's recognized abroad,

and it can be considered your most important belonging.

If you lose your passport while studying abroad,

you won't be able to board your flight home,

and you won't be able to travel to another country either, which is why it matters so much.

That's why you need to take extra care in keeping your passport safe.

If your accommodation is somewhere secure,

leaving your passport or valuables there before you go out,

or bringing along something like a mini safe can also be a good option.

Even so, despite all this caution, without even realizing it,

cases of pickpocketing and losing a passport that way

still happen from time to time.

Before heading abroad from Korea,

you should bring a passport photo and a copy of your passport, so you'd been told

and wondered, "what would I even use this for?" —

I want to tell you, this is exactly for when your passport is lost.

First, if you file a report at the nearest police station,

they'll issue you documents related to the loss report.

After that, at the embassy or consulate, you can get a travel certificate,

or have your passport reissued,

and if you have the passport copy and photo you prepared,

it'll make the whole process much easier.

< If You Lose Your Flight Ticket >

Losing it feels just as bad, but

it's a bit easier to deal with than losing your passport, we could say.

If you lose your flight ticket, you can contact the airline

you booked with and have it reissued.

Just keep in mind that a fee may apply.

Here's a tip — when you get your ticket, take a screenshot of the details

or save them in your phone's notes app,

and reissuing it will go much faster.

< Losing Your Wallet >

The cash and credit cards in your wallet —

what should you do if you lose it?

Just like when you lose a card in Korea,

call your card company's customer service center

to report the loss and have the card suspended.

If your wallet had cash in it,

honestly, unless a truly kind person happens to find your wallet,

you should assume there's no way to get it back.

That's exactly why carrying a large amount of cash

withdrawn abroad isn't something we recommend.

If you have a separate credit card,

it's most common to withdraw cash with that card as needed,

and to avoid the misfortune of losing your whole wallet,

it's best to keep your cards and cash stored separately when carrying them.

In today's post, we looked at how to handle losing

the most important things during language study abroad —

your passport, flight ticket, and wallet.

There's always a way to solve any situation,

so the most important thing is to stay calm

and handle it step by step without panicking :)
