Getting Your Phone Set Up in Korea Before Your Study Abroad Trip!

Hello everyone

A-Work Study Abroad here.

One of the things we use the most in daily life

is probably our phone, don't you think?

That's why, when it comes to using a phone during a long stay abroad,

we get a lot of questions about the best way to do it.

Setting it up after you arrive is fine too,

but these days there's a way to set it up before you leave

so you can use it conveniently, so wherever it's possible

activating it in advance isn't a bad idea, right?

< USA : Ellis >

It's a platform for international students.

If you need a US phone number,

you can receive a SIM card in Korea in advance through this service and activate it,

and get a US phone number set up.

They even provide the SIM card for free sometimes,

so it's very convenient to use.

There are 3 plans, so you can choose the one

that fits your pattern of use.

There's no contract, so there's nothing complicated to worry about.

< Japan : GTN Mobile >

In Japan, if you use GTN Mobile,

you can activate a Japanese number

on the smartphone you were already using in Korea. You can also choose a plan

that fits your pattern, and since the number is issued immediately in Korea,

it's quite convenient.

Calls under 10 minutes are unlimited and free,

and it's a no-contract plan with no minimum usage period.

If you're preparing for a working holiday or language study in Japan,

it might be worth looking into this option in more detail.

< Canada : Phonebox >

When heading to Canada, Phonebox is

commonly used by many people.

It's divided into prepaid and postpaid — prepaid is recommended for under a month,

while postpaid is recommended if you'll use it longer.

Postpaid tends to be a bit cheaper,

if you use an iPhone, you can activate it with just an eSIM,

and if you use Android, you can have it shipped to a Korean address and use it that way.

If you apply with enough time before departure,

they'll send your Canadian number by email about a week to 5 days

before your requested activation date.

In today's post, we looked into

whether you can activate your phone in Korea in advance,

before heading off for your language study program.

Unexpected emergencies can happen while traveling,

and if your phone isn't working properly at a time like that,

it can be a really flustering situation,

so we definitely recommend activating your phone in advance :)

If you weren't able to, there's also the option of activating it locally,

so there's no need to worry too much about it.

On top of that, the A-Work Study Abroad website

is full of various content to help with your language study life, so please check it out,

and feel free to ask us anytime if you have any questions.
